Let's not complicate things even further...

Okay, airdate+50y seems to be the strong favourite, so let's go with that.
That would mean officially starting with The Man Trap on September 8th.

Unofficially though, for those who wish to rewatch The Cage beforehand, let's do it this Thursday(September 1st), but you have to pretend you're an NBC executive while watching it and judge it accordingly ;)

That sounds good, Will try to watch The Cage wearing a suit to get the NBC exec feeling.

Worsted-Tex with thin tie for that "Mad Men" look of the '60's.

Make sure you watch the Unaired Pilot version of Where No Man immediately after. Sure you watch WNMHGB almost twice in a row, but who DOESN'T watch WNMHGB twice in a row?

To be the NBC executive in question, you must call yourself Mort Werner. And know how to play the piano.

Actually, if one wants to justify watching "The Cage" beforehand...it was screened by Roddenberry at a convention somewhere between September 1 and 5. He initially screened "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (probably the pre-broadcast version), then when reception to that was positive, he arranged to show "The Cage".

So really, if you want to be faithful to that, you'd have to watch (pre-broadcast?) WNMHGB, then "The Cage," somewhere between September 1 and 5. And IIRC, at least "The Cage" was in black-and-white...possibly both.

Why was it in black and white since it was filmed in color?

Got me, I'm just going on vague memory. But early home video releases of "The Cage" also had black-and-white restored footage mixed with color footage from "The Menagerie".

OK, I just dug up the source that I'm familiar with...Allan Asherman's first-hand account from his introduction to The Star Trek Compendium (2nd ed., published 1986). He specifies that WNMHGB was shown on Sept. 4 (so "The Cage" would have to have been shown on the 4th or 5th), and that "The Cage" was indeed in black-and-white (implying that WNMHGB wasn't).

And yet the first one to air was The Man Trap.

The Wiki article about WNMHGB asserts that it was the original cut of that episode that was shown at the convention...but says that it was screened on the 3rd.

So, for people who insist on watching "The Cage" first...for the authentic experience, pretend like you were one of those lucky convention-goers and watch the original cut of WNMHGB (if you have that...it's in one of the BluRay sets) on the 3rd or 4th, and "The Cage" on the 4th or 5th.

I'll just pretend I was late to the screening of WNMHGB and as I was rushing in the hall I accidentally spilled some paint cans on the screening copy of The Cage, so it ended up being in colour ;)

"Colour"? Sounds like you may have to wait until 2019 to start your 50th anniversary rewatch! :p

At the risk of spilling worms all over the place, will everyone be watching with the original effects?

For a long time, the only known print of "The Cage" in existence was Gene Roddenberry's personal 16mm b&w copy he took to conventions, including the '66 World Science Fiction Convention.
In '86, Paramount Video released a version of incorporating Gene's 16mm print with the color footage from "The Menagerie".
Two years later, the full color print turned up, and was released on home video, and broadcast on TV before the second season premiere of TNG.
Of course, the remastered version subsequently appeared in 2006 with the new visual effects replacing the old ones.
