That said, if I can get a ticket, I will.

Odds me getting laid: 1 in 176,000,000,000, so I'll play $5 on it my odds are better,

I normally play a dollar on the mega millions. I spent two dollars this time, so I doubled my chances, such as they are.

If I win, I already picked out the house I want to buy, and I will start a small business just to get me out of the house.

I also imagine if I won that every person I ever called friend or family will be trying to get in touch with me.

Been part of an office pool for two weeks now. No, actually, make that three different pools. I tell my coworkers, ”i like to diversify my investments.” ;)

Last time I had a lottery ticket was probably my 18th birthday, which would be close to 10 years ago. I see the Lottery as pretty much just throwing your money away.

There's a retailer called Kavanagh Liquors in the Bay Area. I live a quarter mile from it. Its claim to fame: It sold more than two winning lottery tickets that made millionaires out of players. I passed by the store this afternoon, and there was a long line of customers waiting to buy their lottery tickets from there. I thought, WTF?! Seriously, you could buy them some place else and your odds of winning would just be as bad.

We have an office pool of about 50 people, which is nice. $500 million would be too much of a responsibility, but $10 million, taken over 30 years, would make quite a good retirement. And I had to get in on it; sure it's incredibly unlikely, but how could I risk being the only one left to work here if everyone else wins and leaves?

Probably, but it's fun and it doesn't cost much if you aren't pinching pennies.

I did the math awhile back. As I recall, once the jackpot is over 150 million or so it makes mathematical sense to play. The expected return is actually higher than what you put in at that point....eventually. After playing millions of times in such a scenario.

The most I've ever won is $100 on a scratcher.

No one has the time to purchase tickets of all 170 Million plus possible permutations.

It does if you keep playing it. I guess it's the threshold in which you would either be in or out. I was talking about this with my Brother the other day and he doesn't get much but when it's at least 300 million, than he would buy one. It really is like gambling. Are you going to keep doing it or is there a point where you just stop.

They talked about that on the news. If you play three tickets every minute it would take you 116 YEARS to buy 180 million tickets.

Expected value does not require you to actually do that many trials.

Once you have a steady income, you tend to start thinking of expenses in per-month terms rather than total terms. It doesn't matter---sort of---how much you spend in total so long as it's within your per-month budget.

I had no intention of playing, but my co-worker started a massive pool at work so I tossed in $1.

Maybe that's one reason I've never had an interest in the lottery. There's nothing I would want to do with $500 million even if I had it. Well, I could use a couple of shirts ...

If I won the lottery, I'm at that stage in my life where I would buy some essential stuff, like a New car and be able to move out. Other than that, I would probably put the rest of it in my Roth IRA, invest, let it continue to grow, and don't forget to pay all the taxes that comes with it.
