5 Things We Want to See in the next Movie according to PopMech

I don't want to see any cameos from the original cast in other roles. Spock's appearance in the first 2 movies was as himself and serviced the story - less so in STID but I still liked it. Putting the likes of Takei in as a bit part admiral or something will only cheapen the film in my opinion when there has already been an appearance by an original cast member in this 'new' franchise as their original characters.

I just don't see the point beyond sentimentality.

► T'Pring and Uhura have a catfight over Spock.
Or they both reject Spock and we get a steamy lesbian sex scene with the two of them.

► Who'd win?
The fans.

AH Yes and the reason why slash and femslash will always be in fanfictions and not in any actual serious film with iconic characters.

In all seriousness I would love to see a serious and deep scifi story in trek 3 instead of action sequences and explosions.

Pretty much.

"Serious Film?" We're talking about a Abrams/Orci trek summer movie, not serious cinema.

Again, a Abrams/Orci movie.

:)

If its done well it won't cheapen anything. There were plenty of old guys as background Admirals in STID. If one of them had been Takei I wouldn't have been upset. If it directs attention away from the story or Takei winks at the camera then it would.
there's been plenty of cameos already in the movies from Shatners daughter and Doohans sons. Didn't affect those movies.

After R2-D2's appearances in STAR TREK, good taste and discrétion concerning cameos seems to be a moot point.

Don't you mean, after the Millennium Falcon's appearance among the Federation fleet in Jonathan Frakes' Star Trek: First Contact?;)
I hear you; I really do. I know about John Knoll (from ILM) adding "The Millenium Falcon," in Jonathan Frakes directorial debut (for a major feature) as you say. And I'll be honest with you, I would've much rather Knoll just kept everything STAR TREK, without indulging himself, too much, but ... the truth is you can't even make out what it is. We only know that it's the Falcon because he said it is. It resembles a blurry grey tear, it almost doesn't look like anything at all. If memory serves, it didn't even have the blue flame coming out the ass of it, either. And I can excuse it, for the fact that we can't make it out.

R2-D2, on the other hand, is fairly obvious and detailed enough, where we're actually supposed to recognise and acknowledge it. It's winking at the audience. AND it happened twice, R2 makes a reprise in STID. The reboot's not subtle about "Easter eggs." And if it doesn't really matter WHO is fleshing out the background and crowd scenes, why not have the woman who plays Seska have a reaction shot, next to Brent Spiner who's holding Kate Mulgrue? I mean it really wouldn't be much different than having STAR WARS characters floating about, except for them being from the same franchise.

I understand wanting to start completely new, without anybody from before ever in any of the new STAR TREKs - Hell, I even agree with it - but it's too late for that. Peter Weller & Leonard Nimoy did it, now there's no justification for denying cameos to any of TREK's alumni - unless they're like Shatner who's going to demand the spotlight instead, but we already know about them.

Even in 1996, it would have meant getting a rather late start on Trek Purification. TNG had already been slipping little in-jokes, sight gags, and cross-franchise references in since "Encounter with Farpoint". The practice was hardly a new idea then, and it's long since become commonplace in many movie and TV scf-fi productions. Including Star Trek.

Equating these little tricks with guest roles and stunt casting, though... ? Nah, that dog don't hunt.

It's a sight gag, one that ILM has done for years, and years and years, from Indiana Jones to "Day the Earth Stood Still" (I believe).

One frame of a nod to another franchise is not quite the same as having a known actor from the franchise appearing for no reason or as a non sequitur. Takei could be made to work, as Nimoy was. Same thing with Shatner, who almost did make it. But, it hs to add to the story and not detract from it.

*insert argument for or against Nimoy in ID here*

R2-D2 is only "fairly obvious" if you freeze frame the movie at home. I have watched each of the Abrams films at least half a dozen times and I have yet to see R2-D2, even though I know it's there, while the movie is actually playing. Not even remotely the same thing as having half a dozen former Trek main cast members pop up identifiably in the background of a scene (something I would NOT want to see).

Even when I've watched it and deliberately looked for it I've struggled. It's visible for all of half a second and it's moving fast.

I've seen the movie a dozen times easily and still haven't spotted it either.

All I want from Star Trek 3

NO revenge-driven bad guys. There has been enough of that in the past two movies. The third movie should go back to what Star Trek is about - exploring strange, new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, boldly going where no one have gone before. Have the crew explore a bizarre alien planet or come in contact with a mysterious alien lifeform. No more galactic conflicts in which the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

Your post would fit nicely in the existing thread about "Things we want (or don't want) to see in the next movie," so I'll just move it over there. Buckle up.
