3rd Rock From the Sun

Does anyone remember this sitcom? I was flipping through the channels tonight and found out it's finally back on TV Land. It's been such a long time since I saw this show but it's as Hilarious as I remember it. I'm watching the one where Mary's Brother tells the story about how he was abducted by Aliens, and the brother looks like Balky from Perfect Strangers. Also, this weekend, they're showing the Big Giant Head Episodes.

I was going to buy the DVD sets because they are on sale a lot for around $12 tops, but I forgot. It's back on TV? That's good to know. I hate TV Guide Channel, if the show is still on the air don't show it!

Generally I'm not a fan of sitcoms from the US...

But 3rd Rock is one of the best sitcoms ever. Lithgow, Knight and Stewart were brilliant. And when Shatner turned up? I laugh even now just thinking about it.

I actually just finished watching the entire series run on DVD; I saw the first couple seasons when it first aired a decade ago. And man did I have a good time! John Lithgow is so goddamn hilarious in this show, and the rest of them are amusing as well. Lithgow's character of arrogance and bluster and ignorance and selfishness is the best dumb ass on TV aside from Stephen Colbert's character :D

For a decade old show it holds up surprisingly well, and I was glad to see I actually hadn't seen the vast majority of the episodes. Hilarious show!

I love 3rd Rock and I miss it from time to time. It was a great Sci-Fi comedy.

One of my favorites is the one where Dick starts smoking.

Dick: I can quit anytime I want to. (Puts out cigarette and lights another one.) See.

this show was great

but the last year just dragged on in my opinion and soured me to the series
perhaps, now that it's been a few years i will rewatch it on tvland and see if i fall in love with it again

I remember that show. It was a lot of fun, and I kinda miss it. I guess I know what I'll be picking up to watch during Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks...

I seem to recall wanting to get this show on DVD however finding out that the episodes on DVD have been cut for content/edited for time. Which doesn't make all that much sense to me but it was one of those fundamental things (like whe Quantum Leap started swapping out music for cheaper songs) that kept me from throwing down. Oh well.

And yes, Lithgow as Dick was always brilliant.

I thought it was a silly show, but there were some smart moments, like the in-joke between Shatner and Lithgow about both of them seeing something on the wing of the plane.

The show also has a surprise cameo from a movie actor who's never done tv before or since. Wonder why he picked that show to be on.

Great show! Extremely talented comic actors turned loose.

I only wish they would have commented more on Tommy being the oldest member of the team, but relegated to being the kid. They used that a few times the first two seasons, but essentially dropped it as the series progressed.

I love the show - always entertaining. I agree with Ted on the Tommy issue - I loved that angle and would have liked more of it.

Great show!! They finally started rerunning it again on one of our local digital channels here. The one I remember th best is the where Harry and Sally are in the backyard trying to scare Tommy and his girl friend so they get back together. Harry's wearing the panty hose over his head doing the dance of death with the weed whacker. Then there's poor Mary hitchhiking on the back of truck with deer! lol

3rd Rock has always been one of my favorite shows... it's one of the few sitcoms that I always get a least one good hardy laugh per episode no matter how much I watch it. We have all the boxed sets. The last season is a little painful, but watchable. Frankly I think Joseph Gordon Levitt got a little arrogant towards the end and it showed through his performance and I was a little glad he left. John Lithgow and John Cleese, dear lord, those men are comedy gods.

It's also fun spotting the cameos of actors on there before they made it... such as the Lord of the Dance being Peter Krause of Six Feet Under and Dirty Sexy Money and Emile Hirsch as a trick or treater who Sally and Tommy interrogate while housesitting for Mary, and the various other celebrity cameos through the show.

:rommie:

Yeah that gave us two of my favorite episodes.

- Tommy retires to a retirement community.
- Tommy competes with Dick for Mary.

I adore this show. My whole family are fans. My mother often commented that it presented the world exactly as she, a person with Autism, sees it. She said that every person she new from Autism/Asperger support groups loved the show for the same reason.

TSQ, I'm just curious: would you mind going a wee bit deeper into this?
