3D Printing

Not really... so far, I've been focusing on printing this as large as I can, and making sure everything fits together.

I could easily resize any of these models though, so I could make it 1/1000, or the same size as the Miranda kit, anyway.

The one I have now, is almost exactly as long as the 1/1000 PL TOS Enterprise kit.

I'd definitely love for you to have one.

How's the print of the Valiant going? What's the average print time for all the pieces? I'd love to get a printer but I have zero skill with 3d models whatsoever....

It's coming along... I've got the main hull printed, and the two secondary hulls.

Working on converting the engines now.

Hey guys... more stuff finally.

First, a Batman bust, I did for a friend's birthday gift. I downloaded the model from Thingiverse. I hand painted it, and did the weathering with colored pencils. I think it turned out pretty well.

Next, is my version of Eighth Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver. I built this 3D model myself, then printed it. Still waiting on paint.

And, finally, the Prometheus from Stargate SG-1. This is one of my 3D models as well.

What do you guys think? I'm printing stands for both of these models now, and should be painting tomorrow.

Yep, I have plan for several different communicators and phasers. I especially want to make one of the ST6 phaser, since I've always liked that one.

Well, not a lot of progress, but I got them primed and ready to paint.

I'm pretty impressed with how much detail came out of Prometheus, especially since it's only 6 inches long.

A quick question, MadMan: Do you have to do any sanding to remove any evidence of "steps" between the printing layers, or does it come out pretty smooth?

It comes out fairly smooth, but there are noticeable steps. I sand the models a little bit, before I spray them with primer. You can still see they layers, but I like that you can tell it's been printed.

One last update tonight... the stand for the screwdriver just finished printing.

I'm also about to re-visit my Valiant model... I've got everything done except the Nacelles, now.

Have you tried a "High-Fill" primer on your 3d printed parts to see if it helps smooth the finish any?

Not yet, since I was worried that would also fill in some of the little details.

I usually end up with a good coat of primer and regular coat of spray paint. I hand paint all the small stuff with acrylic paint, and then seal everything in with a coat of clear glaze spray paint.

I did try 2 coats of primer... I would sand it, prime it, sand again, and prime again. That worked pretty well, but it took a lot longer to finish a model.

The batman bust is a good example... the layers aren't very noticeable until you get real close to it.

Hey everybody...

I got the sonic screwdriver painted. All it lacks is the clearcoat, and spraying the stand. I think the stand is going to just be black... I don't want it to take away from my paintjob on the screwdriver.

I tried something new this time, too. I had never weathered anything by dry-brushing, but I think it worked pretty well, here. On top of the gold base coat, I dry-brushed chrome green oxide right on top, for a tarnished brass look. I'm really happy with how it came out.

I'll have a couple of more pics, with the clearcoat on.

Hey guys...

Started the next project already. I've always wanted one of the phasers from Star Trek 6, but I've never seen a model or toy of it anywhere. I decided to fix that, and build one.

I built the model from scratch, using a couple of photos from the net. I think it turned out pretty well. It'll be about 9 inches long, once I print it out.

Another thing I wanted to let you guys know about... In February, Pensacola Comic Con (Pensacon) will be coming back. I've applied to have an artist space there, to make available models and posters and stuff like that. Has anyone ever done something like that? Advice is welcome.

More pics later... I'm going to start printing this tomorrow afternoon.
