The foreign launch of "Star Trek" beamed up a solid rather than spectacular $35.5 million at over 5,000 playdates in 54 markets, winning in 23 territories in its opening weekend.

"Trek" topped the second frame of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which slid 59% to $29.7 million at 8,978 in 102 markets.

The revamped "Star Trek," which had never seen significant international traction in its 10 previous incarnations, scored a respectable $7,100 per-location average. Top "Trek" takes came from the U.K. with $8.8 million, Germany with $4.6 million, Australia with $3.4 million, France with $2.8 million, Russia with $2.3 million, South Korea with $2.2 million and Spain with $1.6 million.

That's not impressive, for a foreign launch with respect to wolverine, transformers and iron man.

Disappointing, I had hoped from more. The Biggest disappointment in France and Germany.

Considering Star Trek: Nemesis did $27 million worldwide, id say its fantastic.

For example. The entire run of Nemesis made $262 thousand in France. The opening weekend of Star Trek in France will make $2.8 Million.

Its ok but its now 50/50 to make $100 million worldwide which is the target rumored set by paramount, I was really hoping for 50 million in OW. It means Trek needs to break $200 million even more importantly now.

That's half of what Wolverine made in its opening weekend here. Quite disappointing, especially when the world premiere was in Australia.

To help put the Overseas opening for Star Trek into perspective, I think it is best to compare it to the Batman Begins opening...

Star Trek: $35.5 Million from 54 Countries
5000 Screens - $7,100 Average

Batman Begins: $41.7 Million from 73 Countries
8000 Screens - $5,212 Average

Batman Begins grossed $167 million overseas in total.

When Trek is out in every market, we'll be able to know a bit better how this is. As it stands, though, this is probably still well above the threshold of what would satisfy Paramount.

Hmmm.... If we assume that every screen which showed BB shows Trek, and Trek maintains the $7100 average...

$7,100 average x 8000 screens would equal $56,800,000 international.

The domestic/international ratio is in keeping with previous Trek outings, the raw numbers are higher. I don't see the problem.

Thank you. That is very helpful. People have been commenting that Wolverine made double, yet it was shown on x2 the screens. Also note the high gross per theater. $7,000 is very respectable considering ST's history overseas.

Want to see something even cooler:

The first of 2009's summer blockbusters, Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," blanketed the international circuit during the weekend, clawing its way to No. 1 with an estimated $73.1 million from 9,364 screens in 101 markets.

$73,100,000 / 9,364 = $7,806  (Hopefully, I didn't just embarrass myself by doing something wrong there; I'm sure it won't take long to find out)

Anyway to beat Batman Begins is absolutely awesome. Also, don't forget some of the countries this has yet to appear in. There are some pretty strong movie countries yet to come.

Yup. Star Trek has yet to launch in Japan, China, India and a few smaller markets.

The first 3 markets are quite big and should see Trek easily reach $50mil opening.

As for finals, $100mil is now well within reach and $150mil quite possible.

Time will tell and for the next few weeks I will be keeping an eye on box office numbers!

Cheers

So the overseas opening is solid by hollywood standards and totally an epic win by Star Trek standards. Celebrate people, don't let the numbers get you down!

^ Yea, not to mention the HUGE curve that Star Trek was given because of Nemisis. Even tepid good news for Paramount would have been a win. All of this is like CAKE to them now because they know the franchise can be saved. People have talked about how much it cost. Come on, imagine all Paramount gets out of this. Not just the movie, not just the DVD/Bluray, not just the I-Tunes, but also alllllllllllll the merchandise. This is all new Trek. All new phasers, all new communicators, all new ships, all new everything. They are going to make a bloody fortune. It is absolutely genius on the part of Paramount and JJ.
