30th Annivesary of 1994!

13 February – DS9: Paradise
14 February – TNG: Thine Own Self

So this week Star Trek does "Stranded on a planet" week!

Paradise: So someone in the 24th Century discovers "back to nature" and thinks she invented the wheel? (They should have name dropped Dr. Sevrin. Or maybe said "Rousseau" just once.)

The thing that rang false about this episode was she kept going on about "You want to get back to your gadgets and your comforts (and your antibiotics)". Never did Sisko or O'Brien ONCE say "Screw the replicators, I want to get back to my KID!"

I don't remember Sisko and O'Brien being paired up that often. I liked it.

Thine Own Self: Gotta admit I groaned a bit when I realized it was a Data episode. (30 years on and I still hold a grudge I guess.) And worse, Data and a CHILD episode. It's actually really good. I may have a lower opinion of Spiner as an actor than I did 30 years ago, but he's fantastic at what he's fantastic at. And he's great in this.

It's a solid story and while they hit the "primitive people with silly misconceptions"* AND the villagers with pitchforks tropes but at no point do I feel like we are supposed to despise these people. (I would LOVE to see an episode where someone comes from the 35th century and says to Geordi "You don't really think THAT'S why warp drive works, do you?!?")
I love the "B plot" more than the main plot. For one, it's a great Troi story. For another Marina and Jonathan just have CHEMISTRY.

Wait, is Stewart not in this at all?

* "Why, just fifty years ago, they thought a disease like your daughter’s was caused by demonic possession or witchcraft. But nowadays we know that Isabelle is suffering from an imbalance of bodily humors, perhaps caused by a toad or a small dwarf living in her stomach."

Next week:
20 February – DS9: "Shadowplay"
21 February – TNG: "Masks" (Oh, good heavens!)

I'm running behind. I accidentally watched the wrong episode of TNG. "Hey this isn't so bad. I wonder why it's called Masks though? I thought that was the dumb episode where Data plays lots of people." D'oh!

Is anyone else watching along?

DS9: Shadowplay. This was pretty much The Survivors without the genocide, wasn't it? Good episode. Kenny Mars is always a treat.

Kenneth Tobey stole the show. (Although Odo was quite good.) You know, I JUST watched The Thing from Another World and I had no idea that was him. Long time ago.

TNG Masks. Ohhhh, that was kind of a slog, wasn't it? Possibly interesting idea. But relying on Brent "Man of a Thousand Faces" Spiner was a bridge too far. Although I gather he got the script the night before. Eeesh.

Eight TNG episodes to go. Next up:

- 27 February – DS9: Playing God
- 28 February – TNG: Eye of the Beholder

DS9: Shadowplay - good ep with lots going on. Jake dealing with a common teen problem and Ben being Best Dad Ever. Kira starting up with Vedik Boring (thanks Quark!). Kira being wonderfully nasty to Quark. Odo and Dax make an interesting combo. Odo got some great scenes with the little girl. Is this the first use of "changeling"?

Wow, I totally remember the excitement and trepidation of 1994. TNG going off the air and a new movie. Wow, so long ago.

I realized I skipped a week! Trying to catch up as best I can...

TNG: Thine Own Self

Nice opening scene between Bev and Deanna on the bridge. Good to see some development of both characters. Their friendship was one of my favorite things on TNG. Good interactions between Troi and Riker too. Marina did a good job in general in this episode and I loved the look on her face when she figured out what she'd been missing.

Amnesiac Data! Radioactive bits! Brent does well here as does Ronnie Claire Edwards as the village's doctor.

All in all, a good TNG episode.

At least Sevrin's followers were all volunteers for their "back to the land" movement. Other than that, I agree. Plus, Alixus used all the "you made me do this" of an abuser. And that hotbox! :ack:

I'm a little surprised none of them left with Sisko and O'Brien - you'd think being lied to for 10 years would've pissed a few off! I thought the last scene with the 2 kids staring at the tech was interesting.

TNG: Masks

Even when LD made fun of it, I didn't really remember this episode. I'm not sure what you have against Brent these days, but I thought he did a pretty good job here. I did laugh when Data fell at Deanna's feet. I think they could've done more with that. I was glad they used Picard's interest in archaeology, but frustrated he didn't catch the sun/moon iconography until late in the episode. I *think* I know what the writer was going for, but he couldn't quite pull it off. It might've been the pacing; I'm not sure. But it definitely felt slow.

Apparently the internet can't always be trusted, different sites give different information, somewhere it's third episode, somewhere else it's eight in season 2.
Somehow the internet took away the ;)at the end of my post. Of course there is a TOS episode called The Changeling. Where the antagonist uses the phrase "Your facts are uncoordinated."

I see, I missed that.
It has been a while since going through TOS, I might have to revisit it in the not too distant future.

Nothing against Brent other than I think they gave him more credit for his versatility than was strictly warranted. Especially when they sprang this episode on him the night before they filmed. I suppose you could also blame the pacing on the writers thinking they were far more clever than they were.

I'm running behind because of that Worms in Space thing. But we don't have new episodes until March 20th and the 21st, so I'll get there.

This was a good one! Season 7 may be less than stellar but that episode really stood out to me.
