30th Annivesary of 1994!

So I watched Armageddon Game and Sub Rosa.

Armageddon Game was pretty good. I don't remember quite where this was in the Miles / Julian bromance. But it was the best thing they could do for both characters. Quark was hilarious and Shimerman is a treasure. I do still love the Miles and Keiko sting at the end.

Sub Rosa. Given the number of memes that I've seen on this episode I'm surprised I haven't seen more articles on the anniversary. It's not... Horrible. Good news: It's a Beverly Episode. The bad news. Well, it's this episode. The best thing I can say is that I totally see what they were going for. And they do it as well as could be expected.

Troi cracks me up in this. And my favorite scene is the fog on the bridge.

"Planet as Theme Park" is... Interesting. I would have been curious to see some other ancient Earth cultures on a planetary scale but that wouldn't have gone over well even in 1994. (Insert Code of Honor jokes here.) "Generic Scotland" is pretty safe.

Sometimes it feels like this episode seems to think Ireland and Scotland are the same place although 30 years ago I probably did too. Quint has the worst Scottish accent in Star Trek. Let's ponder that statement a moment. Was this revenge for casting Sean Connery as an Irishman in The Untouchables?

Oh, three cheers for HD. You can clearly see the headstones for McFly and Vader!

BTW, next week: February 6th: DS9 Whispers and February 7th Lower Decks. (LOW-ER DECKS! LOW-ER DECKS! LOW-ER DECKS!)

1994 was a very good year for Star Trek. You had the end of TNG, DS9 Season 2 was amazing, Generations, and it felt like Trek was getting to it's peak, which I think is still either 1995 or 1996.

I can't believe you got me to watch Sub Rosa. :D

Agreed. Marina was fun to watch. And Gates does pretty well with what she has to work with. I loved her finally getting upset and taking Ghost Guy (34 my ass) out. I also really liked the friendship that Bev and Deanna show here. That was something I always loved on TNG - there were very few close female friendships on TV back then, so I always liked seeing it.

Redheads, lots of plaid... yeah, I probably did too.

ETA: According to Wikipedia, Dorn said this ep was a ripoff of Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches books. Having seen the recent tv adaptation (I read them too but it was decades ago), he was totally right! Lasher in Space!

Armageddon Game
  • Good God, Julian looks so YOUNG!
  • Love the hair on the T'Lani and Kellerun.
  • I've missed hearing the DS9 theme. :sniffle:
  • Miles has the worst luck in the universe.
  • I think this is fairly early in the bromance. We're still discussing marriage vs. being single. And Julian is marvelous at putting his foot in his mouth.
  • "I can be thoughtful."
  • Keiko for the win! She knows her husband.
  • Colm is a damn fine actor.
  • I forgot both sides being behind the massacre. Nice!
  • SISKO! God, I love him.
  • That sting was wonderful!
I had no memory of this episode. I suppose a DS9 re-watch is in my future. :)

In that the actual end of TNG was perfect and it was generally regarded as going out on a high note. (Although the "Season 7 was worse than Season 1" crowd might disagree.) But I see your point.

When you get the perfect ending with All Good Things, I was fine with it. The show can't last forever, despite what the current writers want.

Maybe I was too literal with the word end. =) Poor attempt at humor, just like Data only Data was better.
The episode title 'All Good Things...' says it all. The show had a good run and dare I say, a perfect final episode.

Open ended is always my preferred ending.

That's one of the reasons I have always loved Angel's ending and think it was so much better than Buffy's. Angel was about fighting the good fight against evil and the fight never ends. It ended on a cliffhanger, but it really stuck to the theme of what it was about, like TNG with All Good Things. The missions will continue and the Enterprise was still boldly going. To tie it back to the first episode and then to end with this reclusive man joining his crew at the poker table for the first time was perfect.

I want to give this more than one like....

Running late this week. Last week?

Whispers and Lower Decks

Whispers (DS9)
Some how I totally forgot this episode. Or at least I forgot the ending. If I had remembered the only re-watch value I could see would be to watch the other characters. You all know what I mean. Maybe.

Lower Decks (TNG)
A high point of the 7th season and TNG in general. In retrospect I'm glad that the season 4 finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks didn't mess with this.

Next up:
13 February – DS9: Paradise
14 February – TNG: Thine Own Self

Whispers - 2 O'Brien Must Suffer episodes in a row? Unrealistic detail: a medical gown that completely covers your backside. Colm is a joy to watch, as always. Rosalind Chao does a great job too. But knowing the ending means I didn't feel the rising suspense. So a good ep, but yeah, only worth rewatching to see how he other characters act.

Yeah, all this. One of my absolute favorite episodes. It truly shows what Trek can be when firing on all cylinders. Shannon Fill really impressed me - I wish she'd done more as an actor. Dorn also did a great job.
