Face it, Trek fans don't want "new worlds and new civilizations." They want to boldly go where we have gone before.
There's mostly truth in what you say, but it seems some people who say they are "Star Trek fans" want to unfairly single out DIS for using a pre-existing alien, as if Star Trek hasn't done that numerous times in the past.

We don't know much about the Talosians in the time during and after Star Trek: Discovery's era (The Menagerie provided very little in the way of new information about the Talosians since the time of The Cage), so it seems to me that Discovery has quite a bit of freedom to take a plot involving the Talosians in a new direction...

...Just like TNG took stories involving Klingons and Romulans in many new directions. I didn't see the person I replied to complaining about TNG's frequent use of Klingons or Romulan by mocking the idea of "whoa, we saw the Klingons in TOS! How will this story fit in?!"

I knew it had to be out there, somewhere. Sure enough.

Looks perfect for the new Picard show!

As I've noted numerous times in the past, in different ways TNG, VOY, and ENT all tried to mix up the formula by showcasing different races. TNG in early years attempted to push up the Ferengi as baddies, which...didn't go well...and ended up partially returning to the Klingons and the Romulans. VOY went to the Delta Quadrant - an entirely new part of the galaxy - but attempts to come up with new antagonists like the Kazon were mocked. Ultimately they turned to the Borg. And ENT tried to introduce new races like the Suliban and the Xindi, but ultimately went fanwank in the last season.

I think SIX Multi-Million Dollar Original Series Movies, would very much agree with that statement.
:techman:

I think there were new alien species invented in each series that became classic: TNG had the Borg and the Cardassians (also Ferengi but they were improved upon in DS9). DS9 had the Dominion. Voyager had Species 8472. The closest Enterprise has to a new classic species were the Sullivan and Xindi, but neither reached classic status. Discovery hasn’t had any yet but it’s still a young series (and we’ll see if the unseen person who modified the probe is a new alien species). Each series did a combination of using alien species from past shows and inventing new good species, many of which became classic. I don’t think Discovery is that different yet.

Discovery has introduced Kelpiens, which are pretty well-received.

I always thought the Talosians would be good to use for a series finale, especially if there were no future shows on the horizon. A way to sort of bookend all of Star Trek. Kind of like Q on TNG or the Prophets on DS9.

I guess they'll have to use salt vampires instead.

au contraire. one does not want the delicate Kelpian flesh to become too crispy in the broiler but removing the ganglia too soon leaves the flavors slightly bland and does not bring out the natural juices.
No, thanks. I'll have the vegetarian option, please.
