$25 million on Friday night

It makes me laugh when I read people saying, "Uh oh - I think the film is going to flop because when I went Saturday night there were only two dozen people there/one quarter of the cinema was full/etc..."

Don't people realzie that these days, with multiplexes, you can have 10-16 sessions PER DAY showing!!!!! And if your city is anything like mine, every third suburb has one of the googleplexes that are doing this. There is no way in hell you can expect to go see a film these days and have EVERY SESSION be full!!!

Some people!!!!!

Well the screening I went to would be lucky to profit 25 quid. There were less than two dozen of us in the entire theatre.

I caught a Thursday night showing and the theatre was similarly empty. I estimated maybe 15% of the seats were full.

See above.

Hmm...I recall going to a midnight screening last year for some movie about a guy with a whip and a hat and the theatre was completely full. It was at the same cineplex as well.

Aren't you at least heartened by the early returns?

I'm interested in seeing final numbers for the weekend. I was rather underwhelmed by the movie, so I don't have much feeling one way or another about how the numbers turn out beyond general curiosity.

I am interested in the comments by people who said they would wait a few days/weeks for "the crazies" to clear out before they go.

I said it elsewhere - there is this curious American phenomenon where you guys all HAVE to go to the first day's screenings because you don't want to miss out and you HAVE to be the first ones to see it. Well, I am sure there are a lot of moderate ST fans(like me)who will wait for all that hubbub to die down before they venture anywhere near a cinema, say even as late as next weekend.

THOSE will the be the people you can thank for boosting the all important SECOND weekend's grosses.

Stop with the bloody hand wringing. If this thing is as good as those of you orgasming online have said it is, it WILL have reasonable legs and will do VERY well. Hell, in less than two days it has almost beat NEM's entire take!!!

I see.

Whereas I MUST KNOW NOW! BecauseI want sequels to the prequel!

For another comparison to these early numbers, try Batman Begins. That movie was in a similar position (popular franchise, but a reboot that was trying to shed excess baggage), which also had about a $150 M budget. The film opened on a Wednesday, and the first five days looked like this:

W: 15 M
T: 9 M
F: 15 M
S: 18 M
S: 15 M

That's $72 M, with two extra days included. The film went on to have extremely good legs, and grossed about $205 M domestic—and, rather obviously, went on to spawn a sequel that became one of the most successful movies of all-time. Star Trek is doing well. I'm not worried, based on these numbers... we'll get a sequel.

Got to share this without opening a new thread--my son and I watched the movie the other night. Good crowd, some boisterous folks, but obviously in a fanboy way, so it didn't take away from the enjoyment. He loved the movie.

So today he went, newly independent with license, to a movie with 4-5 of his friends, and what did they see?

Yup, Star Trek. And aside from one of his smarty-pants friends making fun of the movie, they all liked it. Not in an OMG way, but a teenager "yeah, that was all right" kind of way. This is the kind of viewers Trek needs to reel in with this installment before going for the intellectual shock and awe that some die-hard curmudgeons bemoan the lack of in this movie.

Anyway, chip off the old block, that boy. Dad's proud.

Star Trek looks to have about $200-250m domestic in it. Question is whether or not the international figures will match or beat that. Trek ain't like 007 where the international figures are generally 3 times the US figures, but if it can get 40% of the US total, then that's a very, very good thing.

Trek's gonna have legs.

Rival studios are telling me tonight that early numbers show Paramount's Star Trek did $23.5M Saturday. That's only -2% less than J.J. Abrams reboot made on Friday, which is quite a feat and demonstrates that the pic is widening well beyond its rabid fanbase of Trekkies. I hear Paramount is now confident the total will surely reach $75M. Can it go even higher?

I went for the second time tonight to one of the megaplexes showing Trek every half hour. My 8:00 pm screening was about 3/4 full with a good variety of young and old in the crowd. They laughed and cheered at all the right moments and applauded when it was over. And when we left afterwards, there were people lined up to go in for the 10:30 show.

The only negative comment I heard on the way out was from one teen girl, who said she didn't like it, then was rapidly contradicted by all her other teen girl friends who said they loved it. A group of teen boys seemed to really dig it as well. My wife, who is a Trek fan but not to the degree I am, absolutely loved it.

Hopefully that goes up just a bit. But still great news! So I'm thinkin 15 on Sunday.

My first post on these forums, though I have been lurking for a little over a month.

I went with a friend who was not into Star Trek on Friday, 10pm, and at the theater I was at all showings were sold out until 12:00am. They were announcing it over the speakers in the lobby.

On Saturday, when myself, my wife and about 8 friends went, the "Director's Hall" (select a seat and about $2 more expensive) was sold out also. A 4PM showing.

I was the only one really familliar with Trek of all that attended with me, and everyone loved it. The friend I went with on Friday said "that was about a near perfect movie." While I wasn't that impressed, I was happy with this first chapter. I was more of a TNG guy and was kind of expecting a more "serious" movie. Once I knew what I was getting, however, I enjoyed the 2nd showing tremendously.

My wife absolutely loved it...
