24: Exile trailer (2-hour TV movie to set up season 7)

Eh, I dunno. Some African thug-leader isn't my idea of a 24-caliber foe. Moving the action away from America might be a mistake.

I dunno. A bad guy with much more basic goals and desires could be just what 24 needs after all these Los Angeles-based terrorists with plans upon plans upon plans and moles within moles.

A series that tackles scenarios like this one around the world might be fun. (Tears of the Sun: The TV Series?) But it just seems odd coming from 24.

OTOH...the series formula certainly is tired...maybe a reinvention is just what it needs.

A reinvention is exactly what 24 needs. The questions being--is this the right reinvention for 24 and is this for real, or will the show just revert to formula once we start with the season regular?

I'm assuming this movie isn't going to be in "real-time." Is there any info on that, or will Jack already be in Africa when it starts, and the clock will tick down for two hours?

Is this movie filmed so that they didn't have to completely abandon the Africa plot that was suppossed to be season seven's ongoing story arc? I think this season should be the last of the show.

It's mostly in real time. I think it's supposed to start out with a prologue that isn't in real time and then it switches to real time.

Yeah pretty much.

No, they finished filming that season as soon as the strike ended. The entire season's been in the can for a while and that's what you'll see in 2009. This is just a TV movie.

I really want to hear someone, whether its Daniels or Jack or the New President, talk about how quickly they go through Presidents. Palmer I, Keeler, Logan, Palmer II, and now Daniels is being shown the door. Unless this movie is taking place on Inauguration Day (in which case it would be hella bitter cold and frosty in DC), I don't see how it would work.

I hope though that BROTUS is still alive. :(

It is set on inauguration day. Hence Daniels' administration handing over to the new outfit. Apparently Bob Gunton will be the new POTUS' chief of staff in the season proper, though he was the defence sec for Wayne.

The frequency with which 24 changes presidents is indeed ridiculous. I'm guessing that Wayne P wasn't fit to resume office (sob) and Daniels took over, losing in the subsequent election to this new female prez (who was doubtless conceived when everyone assumed that Hillary would be the Dem contender for the White Office - oops!). The new season is set 4 years after season 6, which was 3 months into the Palmer minor administration, so at least the numbers add up.

As for the movie, I like the look of it and think that an African set movie, followed by a Washingron DC season will be welcome changes from the tired formula of recent 24. I like how this movie has transitional elements - Jon Voight was at the inauguration and Tony Todd's African coup leader will appear in the new season. And personally, I found the sight of Jack squaring off at a boy soldier much more poignant than Jack versus some mentor/ relative from his past. I just hope that the Robert Carlyle character doesn't turn out to be the big bad of the movie or season 7.

The other thing is that since about season 5, the opening 2 hours of 24 have been better than the rest of the season, so I reckon the movie should be pretty entertaining, even if the season sucks.

Why do I get a feeling this might be better served on Scifi as part of thier Saturday Night Movies? God what has happened to this once great show turned really really bad.

The trailer looked lame. It's the same thing every season. Now if Jack time traveled to the future to fight the Cylons on Mars I'd be somewhat interested...

No it hasn't, last I heard they were working on episode 13 or 14. Remember they only resumed shooting at the end of February, and getting 16 episodes completely written and filmed along with a TV movie (shot in South Africa no less) between February and "a while" ago would be a pretty mean feat. And there's no need for a rush like that anyway at the moment.

At the rate they are going at though I'd guess most if not all the season would be shot by the time January comes around.

^^
Only 13 or 14? They had completed a third of the season pre-strike, so I imagine they've made it past the half-way mark by now.

2 weeks ago Jon Cassar posted on his website that Brad Turner was directing 13 and 14 and He (Cassar) was prepping 15 and 16. I would guess by now that Cassar is currently directing those 2 episodes or is about to finish them. So 2/3rd of the way through now.
