21 Jump Street - It's actually awesome.

I don't want to imply it's necessarily the same type of comedy, though. While there is some absurdism in 21 Jump Street, there isn't as much as some of those movies I listed. Those are just examples of how much funny there is. And as I said, I think 21 Jump Street has more laughs per minute. I actually had tears and stomach pain at least three times, though. :)

Considering the reviews for this movie have been pretty lack-luster it's actually pretty encouraging to see that you like it. I might give it a real shot now.

Does this count as an official "Zapped!" review? ;)

Idiocracy

Idiocracy isn't funny, it's damn-depressing considering it's an actual documentary on the future of human kind. ;)

I just got back from 21 Jump Street and I thought it was very funny. Good performances by both Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

I saw this with Hubby yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised. The trailer made it look completely slapstick and silly...NOT what I wanted to see, having a few fond memories of the series.

The movie turned out to be silly, but not overly slapstick. It even had a bit of heart. I even liked Channing Tatum (first time that has happened).

Hubby laughed a lot louder and longer than I did...but it was fun.

What the hell just happened? I just liked Channing Tatum in a movie. Apparently, the guy can do comedy. Who knew?

This movie is actually really funny. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Really? I've actually only read mostly positive reviews.

As far as "Zapped!" is concerned...I loved the movie so much I was actually thinking of doing that for the first time in years! I just write so much nowadays, I get lazy when it comes to writing in my spare time, so I just couldn't be bothered.

I forgot to mention but James Franco's lookalike, soundalike, actalike brother was also good as Eric.

The reviews I've seen have mostly been "meh." It does currently hold an 86% at Rotten Tomatoes but I've not read anything or heard anything that was much of a "Go see this!" But you're one of few people whose opinions I can go along with. My buddy and I plan to go see it this weekend after we hit a comic convention.

And, I believe, your last "Zapped!" review was for Avatar.

I was entertained, but I didn't think it was the funniest movie I've seen in a while. It's scoring high and everyone seems to love it, but I don't see what sets this one apart. I wonder what I'm missing.

I read up on the movie before watching it and found out about Depp's cameo, so I knew that the ZZ Top guy eating peanut butter at the beginning was supposed to be him. I still got a kick out of his big scene at the end though, and like the idea that this movie can work as a continuation of the show.

86% is pretty damn good on Rotten Tomatoes, especially considering everything that surrounds it right now.

Hmm...off the top of my head...Superbad. Anchorman. Bridesmaids. 40 Year Old Virgin. Step Brothers. Tropic Thunder. It's tough to compare.
Thanks for the warning. If it fits in with those train wrecks I'll try my best to avoid it.

I don't know if I'd use the phrase "trainwrecks" but I didn't like any of those movies either, so 21 Jump Street stays on my "avoid" list.

As for Zapped!...going by the search it seems my last one was 2009 for "Star Trek." :)

Nice to hear that for a comedy it's better than expected, but I have to wonder how it fares for people who were fans of the show and were hoping to see a movie that had a similar tone.

I wasn't a religious watcher of the show, but definitely saw my fair share of it. The film in no way makes fun of the show, whether with tongue in cheek or not, and is very respectful to it, if not loving. It's a different tone, for sure, but not mocking in any way.

A lot of reviewers are talking about their surprise at how good Channing Tatum was and that he can do comedy. That's one thing that didn't register with me when I saw the movie. I'm indifferent towards him, and I'm not familiar enough with his work to really appreciate his role here. Plus he's done comedy before. He was pretty good in The Dilemma. For me, he wasn't a breakout surprise.

Really? I thought he was hysterical. When they were high, and he busted in on the music class...that is something that's going to be remembered as a classic amongst everyone I know. I thought he was great in the movie.

He was funny and entertaining, I just wasn't surprised to see him do comedy and wasn't blown away by what I saw. He was good, but he wasn't a standout.

The thing is, he's been absolutely godawful in everything else I've seen him in. Even being merely passable in this would have been an achievement.

I've only ever seen him in 'GI Joe' and that dancing movie he was in, and neither of those performances did anything for me. I wonder if maybe he'll start doing more of these and find a better niche for his career.
