21 Jump Street - It's actually awesome.

I just got back from seeing 21 Jump Street, and it was the funniest movie I've seen in a theatre in a long time. The laughs start right away, are consistent through the whole film, and they just get more and more funny.

I highly recommend this movie. Don't let any preconceived notions get in your way about lack of originality, remaking a bad old show, whether you like Channing Tatum or not. I highly advise anyone who loves really great, really hilarious movies to check it out.

The action scenes are actually quite good. Not massively elaborate CGI wank fests the way people may be used to nowadays...but solid, practical, geographically logical, entertaining and funny action scenes.

The movie is really well made from top to bottom.

The funniest moments in the movie are surprises. Which I think is a good thing.

The trailers I saw had to come in at PG-13. During the closing credits they went with a harder R then the movie was.

The best parts for me was when the McQuade Brothers were not the focus. It was cute when the Chief was talking about recycling ideals and nobody is coming up with anything original.

Hmm...off the top of my head...Superbad. Anchorman. Bridesmaids. 40 Year Old Virgin. Step Brothers. Tropic Thunder. It's tough to compare.

I think 21 Jump Street is actually more consistently funny that all of those throughout its running time, though.

Wow, I love those movies, so if '21 Jump Street' is in the same league, I'm suddenly very excited.

I don't want to imply it's necessarily the same type of comedy, though. While there is some absurdism in 21 Jump Street, there isn't as much as some of those movies I listed. Those are just examples of how much funny there is. And as I said, I think 21 Jump Street has more laughs per minute. I actually had tears and stomach pain at least three times, though.

It's a tough call, because, I agree with you, the marketing turned me off to the movie, but word of mouth has me considering at least a rental (with four kids, it's hard to get out to see a non-kid's film on the big screen). On the other hand, it's quite refreshing to know that when I do see it, I won't be upset that all the best moments were ruined by the publicity for the movie.

I am happy to hear it's better than it's being portrayed. I saw the Red Band trailer and was not impressed, despite seeing Nick Offerman having a role. I should have had faith then.

Yeah I saw a screening for the movie about a month ago, and to my surprise it turned out to be one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time.

Comedies like Groundhog Day, The Money Pit, the original Don Camillo movies, Dogma, Life of Brian, ....
In short, movies which weren't written for a guy named Bubba that loves his Budweiser and his pick-up truck and who has a "special" bond with the neighbor's dog.
