After an explosive misunderstanding with the aliens of S’Eekay II, they make a run for it, carrying injured Jay-Den back to their base. His wounds are severe, and he’s the only member of their ragtag crew with medical experience. If he’s to survive the day, he’ll need to talk one of the other cadets through his own life-saving procedure.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Nahla forms a plan to reach her stranded students! There has to be some way through the storm…

That's true, they've never really had one consistent look, pretty every time we've seen them they've looked totally different. Hell, I don't know if was ever official, but at one point someone said the two woman, who didn't even look like cats, that Kirk was with in Into Darkness were supposedly Caitians.
Has any alien called themselves human because they lived on Earth? (If "Caitian" is the species, do they have a word that simply means "citizen" of their planet?)
That maybe what it was, I just remember someone referring them as Caitians and being confused.
I don't think we've ever heard that? I think "Terran" would probably be an appropriate term for that. (Although usual Trek usage seems to only use that for humans from the Mirror Universe, for whatever reason.)
Trek has an unfortunate tendency to treat species and nationality as synonymous -- Vulcans are from Vulcan, Cardassians are from Cardassia, Caitians are from Cait, etc. That ambiguity is my point -- there's no reason it couldn't be a nationality as well as a species name, because of the writers' habit of using the same name for both in almost every case.
Anyway, the etymology of "human" is from the same root as "humus," meaning earth or soil, so technically "human" means "Earthling."
On the contrary -- TOS, TNG, and VGR all frequently used "Terran" as a demonym for Earth, per standard science fiction convention. The use of the term to refer exclusively to Mirror humans only began with Discovery.
In IDW's Kelvin comic series Boldly Go, Commander Valas the daughter of exiled Romulan dissidents called herself "Terran by birth".
Last we saw her in Picard she was 400 years old, so I just assume that she's effectively immortal. Either that or the one we saw in the season 2 finale was already another iteration/clone/whatever like you're suggesting.
I'd really love to see this again. Maybe not all single issue stores, but an ongoing with a focus on 1-3 part stories, preferably ones that aren't about massive stakes or conspiracies.

Very true! Under the comedy, it’s arguable that LD’s been the modern-era show that most seems to love what Trek traditionally seemed to be.
