2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - Thread

The 'out of play/not out of play' was interesting, obviously by the rules its in play, but reckon 9 out of 10 times in a normal game that's given as out.

Boy are german media ripping into the team right now :lol:

Maybe even something good will come out of it. Germany was in the same place in the early 00s, living off past glory but in reality was 2nd grade at best. It took them a hard 10 years of development, trial and error to form a team that was able to win the World Cup in 2014 but many of the players who won that tournament called it quits after or simply were getting past their prime. They were the team that developed over 10 years and had some of the finest players worldwide but the german football association failed to build up the successors on time.

What they have now are players who outside of Germany's premier team Bayern München ( that dominates the league for close to decades now without much of a challenge) are not deciding or really important players in their teams, even if they play for Madrid, Manchester or somewhere else.

Germany is now rock bottom after being kicked out in the group phase for 2 consecutive tournaments. In 2 years Germany will be host to the European Cup and the pressure will be brutal, i doubt there will be a fundamental change until then.

So yeah, these will be hard years for german international football and maybe they need to be there at the moment, so they have the chance to draw the right conclusions and start rebuilding the right way.

Cavani smashing the VAR screen was tough, with one goal missing to advance to the next round. Emotions were running high, the players wanted to strangle the German referee.

Uruguay out. Like the Germans.

Portugal was dissappointing.

Switzerland played well. Brazil was boring, but most of the big teams didn't do more than was necessary. Neymar is going to continue his antics later on....

I've already lost interest in this from now on.

It's a shame the host country is tarnishing this tournament because I think this was maybe the best group stage the World Cup's had in a long time.

Seriously. I'm not watching but I'm following, and the upsets have been crazy.

Italy would like a word.

I wonder if any sport has a more stupid rule than the "get a booking for taking off your shirt while celebrating a goal" thing football has. It's absolutely ridiculous. Have groups of players surround and harass the officials - nothing. Take off your shirt - get booked. Laughable.

FIFA might punish Uruguay afterwards with sanctions, Cavani might get red afterwards for destroying VAR stuff. Bitter end of a carreer I would think. This time it wasn't Suarez.

Brazil, Spain and Portugal benched their best players - others couldn't afford that.

Asian teams were always underestimated....

Oh well, that was fun while it lasted. At least we gave a decent account of ourselves and were legitimately beaten (as opposed to the dodgy penalty in 2006). And with any luck we've lost to the eventual winners of the event.

Argentina don't look impressive at all, but Netherlands isn't the force of old and Brazil are losing players to injury (2 in one day with 2 before that). Hopefully England will beat Senegal tomorrow and I think a game with France in the Quarter Final will come down to Penalties and both sides aren't that good at them. Spain for me seem the most likely winner despite defeat to Japan.

No, Argentina haven't been impressive (hence my "with any luck" qualifier), but they do have Messi. Frankly I'd rather see them win the thing than any of the remaining contenders. But the mileage of others will obviously vary.

They should get punished too. Appalling behaviour.

A rule made up by fat jealous men in FIFA probably.

Seriously though, i could understand it if the shirt came off and was thrown into the crowd, but if you keep hold of it or like this case pick it up off the floor, i cant see the harm, provided it doesnt waste time them should be no issue.

To be fair the ref in this instance, he had to follow the rules, but he handled it well, even shook his hand. You could tell he didnt want to do it.

I didnt think Argentina were even in this tournament? There is some team called 'Messi', or at least thats what the media keep leading me to believe, dont think anyone else plays for Argentina

I am looking forward to seeing England playing France in the QF provided that the Three Lions could overcome the Lions of Teranga in the R16. I have never liked England but they have looked very good so far in this tournament.

In lieu of my beloved Italy not being there at this world cup, I really do want the Dutch to win the world cup. I will also be happy if Argentina wins the world cup.

Japan and S.Korea look good so far but i predict they will not make it to the semis.

Well, we made it past Senegal, but France will be extremely hard go beat, and I believe this is where our World Cup dream ends. A France/Brazil final looks likely to me.

South Korea were...well, very ordinary in defence but Brazil were something else in that first 35-40 minutes. Richarlison's goal was quite brilliant, and the other two (somewhat dodgy penalty aside) weren't bad either. Can't see Croatia allowing them the same sort of latitude but it should certainly be a decent game.

Counting on Morocco and Switzerland to make the Quarterfinal lineup something other than an absolute snoozefest after such a great Group stage.

Fascinating how much better Portugal always look without Narcisso flouncing around the pitch demanding the ball and acting like a spoiled child when he doesn't get it or someone else has the audacity to score a goal. And now he's out there looking for his latest "record".

Anyway, they've been pretty impressive. Switzerland have had no answers.

Brazil's out - Good-bye, Neymar. No more rolling on the ground.

Argentina already in front against the Netherlands....
