From what Ted Sullivan said on Twitter it was KMFB's idea for the show:

I'm pretty friggin' happy for her!

I feel better now. Now I'm curious about the potential adventures of not-nessessarily-Captain Picard. Admiral Picard and Ambassador Picard both seem boring. I think I've got my fingers crossed for Indiana-Jones Picard, having Jack McDevitt-y and/or Buried-Age-style adventures in Space Archeology. That seems like a pretty open premise to me.

Commenter Ben Grimm over at BirthMoviesDeath has an interesting theory about what this show could be:

"My guess: Ambassador Picard dealing with the fallout of the explosion of Romulus. Single story, non-episodic, leads to the Romulans joining the Federation (or at least becoming allies) and a hopeful, peaceful future."

It's great news. When I read she was involved in it, this was a fitting summary of my response:

Only down side it may be a while before she's able to do that last Voyager book.

That was my thought when discussing this earlier with the Timeliners.

Picard is back? A post-Nemesis production? KMFB is involved?

Did I wake up in an alternate universe this morning? I was almost certain they'd never revisit the TNG-era again.

Me too. Just look at the introduction on the first page of the Litverse Reading Guide. Boy was I wrong.

Going to have to edit that.

To clarify my comment in the interest of alleviating concern (and in a futile attempt to avoid wild speculation ;)), here’s what I said on my Facebook page when this topic came up:

“What I can honestly say is that I was aware this was in the works even before I began developing my outline for the TNG book I'm currently writing, and that carrying on the TNG storyline as we've been laying it out all this time was my specific mandate, both from my editor and CBS Licensing. I point-blank asked about any particular concerns or issues which might impact what I was planning should this come to pass, and was told to carry on with what I was doing.

Personally, I'm not too worried about the TrekLit status quo, at least as things currently stand, but that's me, speaking only for myself but based on the conversations I've had about this.”

And that’s after I edited out ‘extremely unlikely’ in the wake of the ‘Discovery will be an anthology series’ scare.

You should be worried because the current TrekLit story will get tossed, there's no way the staus quo won't change. They probably told you to carry on as planned because it's too early in development to give specific directions to lit writers or because they don't plan to pull the plug until after the release of your novel.

Really, we should only start worrying when we know for sure what we're gonna worry about.

If the post-Nemisis lit verse is reboot because of the new series, it won’t bother me at all. I always considered them as an off shoot. Just like the Star Wars EU, that didn’t bother me either.

It’s just the nature of an evolving franchise.

Happens all the time in the comics.

Just a thought, but you probably shouldn't tell a novel writer what went on in a conversation between him, his editor and CBS Itself that you weren't part of.

Here's another thought, if he makes parts of the conversation part of the discussion I can have an opinion on what was said. I also didn't tell him what went on, I'm making guesses about what wasn't said. I'm not doubting the words they said to him, I'm just doubting that it means there's no reason to be worried.
