The simple truth of the matter is, Star Wars is much more popular than Star Trek.
Not in my house it isn’t
Among the general public though? Yeah Star Wars totally is. The simple fact of the matter, Star Trek does not have annual movies hauling in multibillions of dollars at the box office.

That seems strange that ST readers would have such vastly different purchasing habits than SW fans.
Well, they're different franchises in a lot of ways. There's overlap in their audience, but there'd be a lot of difference too. ST has been around a decade longer, for one thing, and ST books have been a steady going concern for more like two decades longer. ST is mainly a TV franchise while SW has been mainly a movie franchise until recent years, and is mainly in animation on TV. Plus ST is science fiction while SW is fantasy, and ST is more forward-looking while SW is very much nostalgia-driven. Honestly, I find it surprising when people talk about them as if they were equivalent. They don't really have much in common besides being set in space.
I like Star Wars and I own all the movies which I’ve rewatched several times.

Ah Yes, one of the poorest areas in Western Europe who also had the stupidity to vote Leave.

I agree. I think even George Lucas said Star Wars was fantasy. He really wasn't concerned about how possible things were, or trying to keep it scientifically accurate. Star Trek has always tried to base it's story in reality, in the sense that it takes place in our section of the galaxy, and they use science consultants and so forth. I remember sometimes when some of the production designers and illustrators describe what they were trying to do and why, it would almost make me feel like I could go out in my garage and build a warp engine. They put a lot of thought into how things work in universe, as well as try to reason out where things would be and why. Star Wars is more like on opera, more interested in the overall story then it is in the science behind it. I like Star Wars, I've watched the films, but I usually will wait a few weeks to go see the new films when it is less crowded (unlike Star Trek films where I am there the first or second day), and like David, I don't follow their extended universe at all. I don't follow everything Star Trek puts out, I don't have enough time unfortunately, so I made a choice since I do like to read to follow the novels, and I get my Star Trek fix between films and shows that way.
