2018 Releases

So not only do we not have any announcement about 2018, we don't have any October novel. October 31 came and went with no release.

Maybe a contract has been signed and the delay in the announcement is to allow the publisher (and I hope that it is S&S) to draw up a schedule and announce it at the same time.

I can’t find the original publication schedule for 2017 but the much delayed and rescheduled Voyager novel may mean that something was brought forward.

At this point, I'm almost ready to write-off the entire first half of the year, aside from the ones we already know about. It was mid-October last year that Hearts and Minds and Enigma Tales went up for pre-order. Here we are, start of November and all that's been announced are the new Discovery and Voyager novels from S&S, and Prometheus Book 2 from Titan. I'd be very surprised if there's anything else prior to the end of July.

I’m not ready to write off the first half of 2018 quite yet.

As I said earlier in the thread one of my contacts on Twitter said that he knew of at least three novels being written.

As I mentioned the three that had already been announced in my original post I’m assuming that these are three unannounced novels.

If this is the case S&S might be able to move quickly if they get/have got the new license.

IMO, those three novels will almost certainly be second half of the year, especially given other publishers already have their schedules for the first half of the year more or less done. For example, a Star Wars novel due out at the end of June is available for pre-order.

Well, if that is the case, it’ll give me the chance to empty my bookshelves a bit before filling them up again.

I'm skeptical. Assuming that S&S doesn't have the license past the end of the year, then these hypothetical three authors would be writing these books on spec, and I find that unlikely. On top of that, I wonder if CBS Licensing would approve a novel outline for a book that wouldn't be published until the next contact.

Yeah, I think anything that was going to come out in the first quarter or so of next year, would probably be more or less done by now. I guess the author's could have been working on books this whole time and been contractually obligated to keep quite, but I doubt that. Pre-orders tend to be a big thing, and I doubt they would skip them just to wait for some kind of big announcement.

Considering that books like the Slings And Arrows ebooks are already written, it would be a lot quicker to get those books into bookstores than all-new stories that, depending on how long the delay is before the green light is given to write the stories, can be put into the pipeline.

Or they could always reprint some older books, like Best Destiny that relate somewhat to Discovery or the film series.

Reprints of old novels aren't a bad idea. And they did it in 2010 to make up for the gap caused by the Kelvin timeline novels being pulled.

O I see. I read your comment that there were unpublished ebook originals for 2018 that were already written and just waiting for release.

I agree with the reprint idea. Lets say the renegotiations have hit/ did hit a snag and there will be a several month gap before the first new novel is finally published. You’d think publishing those last uncollected SCE and Slings and Arrows novellas would be better than doing nothing.

I’m not expecting it though.

Plus with the SCE and Slings And Arrows books there would be renewed interest in the books, since besides fans who don't have the books yet, they could get them in stores so that regular shoppers who are maybe looking for a birthday or some other gift for someone could buy them as well. It's been 10 years since Slings And Arrows came out, and the last 6 SCE stories were released.

Not to mention but could be omnibuses issued of just TOS stories. According to Memory Alpha, aside from Mere Anarchy, which was released in omnibus in 2009, there's been:

Seasons of Light And Change
The More Things Change
Shadow Of the Machine
Miasma
In Tempest's Wake (Vanguard)

And for TNG/DS9 there's been
The Struggle Within
THe Stuff Of Dreams
Absent Enemies (Titan)
Q Are Cordially Invited
Lust's Latinum Lost
Rules Of Acquisition
I, Constable

Plus there's been the DTI ebooks The Collector & Time Lock, and the 3-part New Frontier series The Returned, which from what I know, was released like the first book in the series, where it was a number of small books, and then an omnibus was released.

So there are all those books that Pocket could publish in paper format for any delays.

I was wondering, is it possible the S&S just don't find printing Star Trek books all that profitable anymore. It's sad to think, I love reading all the Star Trek novels. I find it interesting that even this year, there were a few times there were no Star Trek books. Is it possible S&S was just fulfilling their final contracts? Maybe they'll just release 2 or 3 Discovery books a year while the show runs and that's it. I'd hate to think that is the case, that I read my last TNG, DS9 and Enterprise books. There's still a VOY book out there but that's basically a holdover (plus one more after that, but who knows if that ever gets printed at this point). David Mack is one of the more prolific writers and I see in none of his posts any Star Trek books in the pipeline.

If that were the case, they'd drop the license and that would already be public knowledge. It has been confirmed they are renegotiating, therefore Trek novels are profitable enough.

There are various reasons for that. Kirsten Beyer's involvement with Discovery meant her Voyager novel got postponed a few times, and Discovery itself getting postponed meant David Mack's tie-in got moved around the schedule.

IIRC, he's got his own original novel series in the works now.
