Didn't see a real time post on this yet...but Chicago lost its bid for the Olympics!

I am from Chicago, and a couple quick thoughts:

- very much shock that Chicago lost in the FIRST round. With all of our effort and resources, that we couldn't even get past the first round? That part didn't make much sense to me.

- The voters of Chicago never got a chance to give an even advistory referendum to ask if we wanted the Olympics. That would have gone a long way for stronger support

- Chicago needs to focus its attention on the everyday long term issues, such as our youth, many of whom might not make it to 2016 itself

- It's exciting to see the Olympics in a NEW continent...really in spirit of the Olympics bringing the WORLD together

I think, so soon after Atlanta, London, Beijing, and arguably Barcelona, it would make geographical sense to bring the Games to South America for the first time. I would have been happy to see it in either Rio or Chicago, personally.

Good luck to the Brazilians, though - if organising London 2012 is anything to go by, they'll need all the luck they can get.

I was kind of rooting for Rio. The Olympics have been hosted here in the USA lots of times, so it is nice to see it go to South America for once.

I was hoping Rio would get it as well. And they did, so that's cool. Plus I'm looking forward to seeing some events live for a change.

I'm from Chicago too and I was completely ambivalent about getting the 2016 games. While I love the city, it's got way more issues to focus on than a horse and pony show for 2 weeks 7 years from now that would more than likely come out of taxpayers' pockets.

Hopefully this is the final nail in Daley's coffin (along with that idiotic parking meter deal).

I was pulling for Chicago, because the city could use the boost that would come with the international exposure of the Olympics. I suspect it'd help the local economy tremendously, too.

Even so, I'm to disappointed that Rio will host it, for the simple reason already cited: South America has never hosted a Games before. Europe (30), N. America (12), Asia (5), Oceania (2) - yet none for S. America.

I was completely shocked when they said Chicago was the first out. I thought for sure it'd come down to Rio or Chicago.

To say Im disappointed hardly covers it. I live about an hour away from the city and I was ready to start saving up to go to an event, kinda something I've always wanted to do.

Good for Rio though. They were my second pick.

I was glad to see Rio get the games- nice to see a South American city get the games finally. Time zone-wise, Chicago would have made watching the games a bit easier for me, but the time difference shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure why any city would want the games anymore, though. Seems to me like they're more of a hassle than they're worth.

I was happy for Rio, why America needs to host another Olympics any time soon is beyond me.

I'm pleased that Rio have won the race to host the 2016 games, I just hope that it does not cripple them economically. It's also great to see them played in South America, who knows the 2020 may well be in Africa?

Even better news, Rugby Sevens will be a demostraction sport at 2016. With that I actually wished that Toyko got it since Japan is a lot closer.
