Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Fun stat of the day: The Blue Jays are out-slugging the Rockies as a team by about 10 points.

The Jays do not play half their games at Coors.

Have the Jays (or will they) play at Coors this year?

At the beginning of this season, I set this thread up thinking the Cubs got Joe Maddon, and the Savior himself Kris Bryant (Even though I think Duffy is more deserving of ROTY) coming up and little did I know how good they would really be. This question of winning the world series is actually still in play, with a few months left of the season.

Duffy and Bryant are pretty much neck and neck, statistically speaking, with Duffy at a 123 OPS+ and Bryant at 124 OPS+, in roughly the same number of games. Bryant has the Cubs narrative around him, though, which will go a long way with the BBWAA.

I think when all is said and done, it will be a three player race with Duffy, Bryant, and Kang from the Pirates. Bryant does have more narrative, but I really do hope they don't overlook the other two and their contributions this season. It will be a pretty close and entertaining race down the stretch.

^The strongest argument for Duffy might be what he's done compared with the man he replaced. One of the biggest questions facing the Giants entering this season was whether they'd be able to replace Pablo Sandoval's bat, and Duffy's managed to do that (and perhaps more, as he's more consistent than Pablo ever was).

Wow, what a series this has been so far. Tanaka OWNED it today.

Red Sox 22 - Seahawks 10. Football score or what?

I was at Friday's game and the atmosphere was electric, something we have missed in Toronto for a long time.

Whether we can avoid the sweep will rest on which Drew Hutchinson shows up tomorrow.

Severino's got some promise, I just hope he can last at least six or seven innings.

Just got back from the Giants game and I got a gift last Christmas of being able to go to a lot of Giants games this year and I was worried that I would go to these games and still miss out of a Madison Bumgarner start. Well, when I found out that he was pitching today, I got excited and being out there in the heat (And it was hot in San Francisco today) I couldn't help but just marvel at what this guy does. He goes out, the outing after he pitched a complete game, and tosses 15 strikeouts, gives up 3 hits, and goes 2-3 at the plate, being one of the pitchers were the DH is a great idea in the National League argument does not apply. It's just so fun watching that dude pitch and when he's on, it's just something you sit back and just enjoy. I don't know if he's going to win NL Cy Young this year, but the last few starts, he's had Cy Young stuff. Also, today was Juan Marichel day at the ball park, and Madbum's performance would make the Dominican Dandy proud.

Pretty cool:

Kyle Schwarber's biggest fan is the veteran catcher he's trying to replace, Miguel Montero, who has already made plans to help the Cubs rookie get better, starting Jan. 10.

Montero told Schwarber he expects the 22-year-old to be in Arizona on that date for a month of workouts. And Schwarber's all in.

"We're going to work together on defense," Montero said. "I don't want to have bats, I don't want to have anything else. I just want to work on defense.

"My plan is to help him be the best he can be behind the plate," Montero said. "It would make me proud -- it would make me proud of myself to help him be one of the best catchers in the league."

Montero, 32, said he had plenty of coaches help him, but no player ever took him under their wing to teach the nuances of the position. He knows Schwarber will someday take his job.

"I know it's going to come one day, and when it comes, I hope it's him and nobody else, because he can rake," Montero said.

In today's installment of "pitcher wins are meaningless":

In his 23 starts with the Braves Shelby Miller has received 1 or 0 runs 14 times. His 2.54 run support is the lowest in baseball.
— CJ Nitkowski (@CJNitkowski) August 16, 2015

More Shelby Miller: His run support average dropped to 2.49 today, the lowest in 34 years (Randy Martz, CHC, 2.42) via @STATS_MLB

Someone put Shelby Miller on suicide watch. Throws seven no-hit innings, extends winless streak to 16 games.

That's great to hear. I know he also had good things to say about Cubs catching prospect Willson Contreras when he was on his rehab assignment, too.

John Farrell starts chemo today. Francona's going with him.
