2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Hamels to Rangers for a whole buncha prospects.

Makes me glad the Cubs weren't that committed to getting Hamels.

We still need another starter, I hope they call up Edwards for a spot start.

Rangers gave an MLB-ready pitcher and something like 5 of their top 13? I wouldn't have wanted the Cubs to do that.

I wonder if the 5th starter is even in the org at this moment...

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

This is the best-case-scenario for the Cubs re: Price.

No loss of pick for signing him next year.

Not going to anyone in the division for the stretch this year.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Yeah, Daniel Norris is a global top-15 prospect; Detroit's haul for Price was really good.

Carlos Gomez to Mets; Brewers get Zach Wheeler and Wilmer Flores.

The Mets left Wilmer Flores in the game after the news broke. Poor kid. What a shit show.

Far as I'm concerned, Wilmer had every right to shed a tear or two. This "no crying in baseball" is just stupid macho bullshit, and it has to end, like right now.

What I'm wondering is, why didn't Terry Collins know? If a player has been traded, why wouldn't the manager be told?

It's sad to see Hamels and Papelbon go, particularly after Hamels no-hit the Cubs the other day, but I can't blame them. They want to play for contenders, and the Phillies aren't going to be that for a while.

I'm eagerly waiting for the day when a hitter takes one look at that stupid staring move that Papelbon always does, and bursts out laughing. :guffaw:

So is retaliation for a HBP, and you seem to have no issue with that.

Edit: Per Jayson Stark, the Cubs are "aggressively attempting" to move Castro. Meaning they're frantically shouting "MOVE! DO SOMETHING!" while runners circle the bases and he stands motionless, hands on his hips, with the ball on the ground next to him.

MLB has either got to remove the warning for hit batsmen or actually enforce it, with no more "judgment" calls. If the umpire issues a warning and someone hit another batter, that pitcher is gone. Regardless of the judgment of the umpire. I'm tired of it, its just one of those boondoggles that makes baseball look stupid.

I don't fault the player at all.

The trade wasn't completed but had been leaked. So he hadn't really been traded yet.

Yeah, they should be cheered (well, Hamels should be) and wished well in the future. But it's good for the Phillies to actually get something to build from an good for them to have a chance to win something.

I disagree, but I'll go further as well. I would remove the concept of warnings entirely. If a hit batsman seems intentional, he should be tossed without a warning. Tossing people, to me, is saying you can't do it. And it doesn't matter to me whether it's the first person hit or not.

What a dismal series for my Angels. They were in first place for about a day and a half, then get swept by Houston.

Determining intentional or not is all judgement, and with the inconsistency in strike calls I've seen this year, I don't think any of these umps should be making that call.

Not to mention the occasional ump who confronts players. They might make the "intentional" call just because a pitcher was questioning his strike zone.

Dear baseball gods,

Today is my 31st birthday. Please don't make me wake up in a world on Saturday where Starlin Castro is still a Cub.

Love,
Timby

The Astros are the real deal.

It could be worse Digits, you could be a fan of the MLB's best farm team. Or be paying $30 million to Billy freaking Butler - a man who gets winded halfway to first base.

Sigh.

ETA: I have a question for Cubs fans - how do you maintain your enthusiasm for a team that is clearly going nowhere for few seasons? This "rebuilding" business sucks!

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Billy Butler is still playing baseball? Is that just his corpse they role out or is he still alive?

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Butler's only 29.

I might have asked myself that once the rebuild started--but even at that point they'd made the playoffs (no good result) in back to back years in the recent past. Some teams haven't made the playoffs in decades. Look at the Bluejays.

I think they're now at a point to be competitive fairly regularly at this point.
