Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)
Cespedes has a unique clause in his contract that gives him the right to be outright released at the end of his contract, meaning the team that's holding him at the end of his deal (now the Mets) has only a five-day negotiating window after the end of the World Series to keep him -- they can't give him the QO and under the terms of the CBA, any outright released player can't be re-signed by his previous team until May 15 of the following year. Teams keep trading him because he'll be a somewhat attractive target in free agency (even though his on-base skills suck out loud) and they want the opportunity to acquire him without giving up a draft pick. The Mets grabbed him because they can't afford future salary commitments right now, so this was a budget-neutral move.
Why the hell does Cespedes keep getting traded, anyway? I mean, I'm glad the Mets have him, but why didn't any of those OTHER teams hold onto him?
