2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (LOL NO)

Yankees in 1st heading into the break.

AL East is interestingly blah... I don't think it's as bad as folks tout.

I thought Baltimore would be leading now, but the Rays, Orioles and the Blue Jays all got off track the last couple weeks.

The Jays are a train-wreck. Sure, they can win 15-14 on their offence, but then they can blow it in the eighth or have a starter getting shelled and pulled before the end of the 2nd inning.

This is not a playoff team.

I still remember how Sammy Sosa would be shit for like two weeks after the Home Run Derby because it fucked up his swing.

I always thought it was hilarious how seriously Sosa took the 'Derby. He was practically in tears after he lost to Jason Giambi in '02.

Just catching up on the '15 ASG and thought it was interesting...the Nationals seem to want to forget that they were ever the Montreal Expos, yet ALL of their Franchise Four were former Expos! :shifty:

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Why would anyone want to remember the expos?

Worst mascot ever.

SchwarberTime(tm)!

(to be honest, it's too bad Montero will be out possibly 6 weeks)

This will be ... well, it'll be something.

2 hits...and one throw sailing into CF last night. He is what he is.

Three hits, came dangerously close to some really bad passed balls, one catchers interference and a throw sailing into center field. And he needed help from the dugout to call the game.

And the Cubs think this guy can stick as a catcher.

Wow, he needed help calling the game on his first ML start as catcher AND he had a few miscues...hard to imagine. Left field it is!

I've enjoyed watching this Cubs team through their series in Atlanta. Even felt a little disappointment tonight when Lester lost the no no. I'll probably tune in to some more of their games. A lot of fun young talent to watch on that team.

Somebody tweeted yesterday - every starting position player but Fowler and Coghlan was <=25 years old.

Again, I feel that if Cubs management had the slightest hope that Schwarber could play an outfield spot, then this hilariously bad attempt at forcing him into catching -- something that he was really, really bad at in the minors -- doesn't happen.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

Great catchers are rare, good ones still a little hard to find, as far as offense and defense.

If Denorfia wasn't hitting over .300 it would be an easy choice to put Schwarber in LF.

Hell, if Schwarber is hitting better (longer term), maybe you put him there anyway. You want the best chance to win.

The issue is that Schwarber has a less than ideal body type for a corner outfielder. Normally you can stash guys in left, but Schwarber has a couple of knocks on him -- he's listed at 235, which is being incredibly generous (he's closer to 255); he has a cooked macaroni noodle of an arm (same reason he wouldn't be able to play third) and he's slow as hell. I saw him for a half-dozen games at Iowa this year and he's just totally wrong for the position -- he can't jump from the stance to throw to second quickly because of his bulk, and he has no sense for framing or foot placement. For heaven's sake, the most positive thing any scouting reports said about him in May and June was basically, "Well ... uh ... he's gone a week between passed balls."

That's not a death sentence for him, because he can always lose weight and build arm strength, but realistically his only landing spot on an NL team is at 1B, and Rizzo's got that locked up for the next decade-plus.

If we're being realistic, at least one of Schwarber and Vogelbach is on another team's 40-man roster by the winter meetings. The Cubs desperately need pitching help on all fronts (Epstein's inability to build a bullpen dates back to his Boston days, so this will be an interesting process) and they have no help coming up anytime soon from the minors, considering CJ Edwards is their best prospect and he's already had severe shoulder injuries, and since they have far more bats than they can actually use -- between Schwarber, Vogelbach, Almora, Torres and arguably McKinney, they just have an absolute glut -- that means some of those guys are expendable.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

As far as the potential pitchers available, who would be worth a Scwarber and/or Baez? Shields maybe?

I'm not sure Cueto, Haren or Latos are worth a couple high end prospects. I think I'd rather see the Cubs stand pat. Not that those guys couldn't help, but they aren't worth a big haul of prospects.

If they could get Shields, maybe. They were interested in him before the Padres swooped in.
