2014 MLB Season: How Many Pitchers Will Die For Our Sins?

The Kiss Jeter's Ass tour is annoying as hell. At some point we have to draw the line with the extensive ceremonies honoring players who may be Hall of Famers but certainly aren't SuperStars™.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I hate Chipper fucken' Jones for starting this whole retirement tour bullshit. With Mo Rivera, I could kind of understand it, because he was indisputably the greatest reliever of all time and he was retiring when he was still at the top of his game, but Jeter's been actively hurting his team defensively for, eh, ten years or so at the least, and his offense has been steadily declining for about five. So basically he's getting this grand farewell tour because ... because it's the Yankees' divine right or some shit, I don't know.

Transformative players deserve farewell tours. Jeter is a Hall of Famer but he is an- above average SS who happened to play a long time for the BEST TEAM ON THE PLANET™.

You know who deserved a farewell tour? Barry Bonds. There, I said it.

Absolutely -- he was only the greatest hitter in history.

Broke records left and right, and was simply amazing to watch in person. Pitchers feared him, genuinely feared him. His biggest sin was not sucking up to the baseball media (and not playing on the East Coast).

I understand about all the BALCO labs garbage, being a big fat jerk, etc. etc. But that man deserved accolades, and he did not get what he deserved.

It just goes to show you just how much being nice to the writers plays a role in the narrative that they frame about you. Ray Lewis was literally involved in a double homicide, but was hailed as a conquering hero upon his retirement. Derek Jeter has been a below-average player for years, and he has a grand retirement tour because he's so PR-friendly. Barry Bonds murdered baseballs for 21 years, but he was surly and kind of a dick to the writers, so he was considered to be in the same league as Satan, Hitler and Marge Schott.

I keep hoping that Jeter pisses hot and gets popped for steroids on the last day of the season, just to see the collective baseball media lose their minds and have no fucking clue what to do.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Your AL West Champions...The Los Angeles Angels!

:techman:

A fantastic run in the second half. The Angels put up some amazing numbers. I'm not convinced we have the pitching depth to go all the way, but here's hoping...

Congratulations! I am happy for you, and although I am notttttt an Angels fan, you seem like a nice fellow, and I will cheer for them in the playoffs (well once Oakland is eliminated, which by the looks of things will be in the Wildcard Game :( )

Don't count out Seattle just yet.

Bonds is up there, but I'm not sure number one.

I still think, even if you completely remove his steroid years (my position is you should average him out instead), he still belongs in the Hall of Fame.
