If I may add my two cents to this whole 2012 thing.
The Mayans, and many other Central American civilizations IIRC, believed that the world operated in cycles. Different epochs that began and ended with great big, ground-shattering events. This isn't a considerably unreasonable belief, at least with regards to the past. Ancient accounts from all over the world attest that before (or duirng) the dawn of civilization, lots of bad shit happened. We're talking fire, brimstone, massive storms, floods and shitloads of stuff freezing over. Yeah, they're definitley right in a way to think the world works like that.
Let's not forget that Central America went through civilization like socks. And through minor to moderate natural disaster like any civilization. But practically ever religion in the region was superstition and paranoia taken to an extreme. It is to be taken with a grain of salt. A massive grain of salt.
Nothing is going to happen in 2012. And a lot of people are going to feel silly.
