2012 episodes to be across one week?

^It's something a lot of people are assuming, but the only thing that's been officially said is a shorter run in 2012, which could mean 6/7, or 4/5, or 8/9, or...

forgive the analogy, but i can't see them shooting their wad all at once. if anything they will want to build interest in Who for the anniversary. and, they are going to want as much merchandise sold as possible.

Whya re we all of a sudden speaking of 5 episodes? Wasn't 6 or 7 announced for 2012 already, or was that something I assumed when they said "split season again"

They didn't say anything about a "split season" or give any number of episodes.

At this point I'm convinced (a) Beth Willis will be gone from the series after the Xmas special, (b) they still don't actually have a frigging clue what they're going to do next year and (c) Moffat reallllly needs to quit Twitter because he's not doing himself any favours.

Pretty much nothing has been said or confirmed.

It's largely assumed, and, from my POV, I asked around with some contacts and was told season 7 is budgeted as two 7-episode sets, and that it's logical that that's how they'll be aired also.

That's totally unofficial, of course - I'm not involved in DW these days.

Ah....Yea, I went back and checked the "Bad News for 2012" thread wondering how I misremembered, and realized it was you who led me down that trail

You know, I wasn't too crazy about Children of Earth airing all in one week. That's partly personal preferance for me, I enjoy leisurely tuning in on a weekly basis. Though it's also because that was not a particularly good week for me, lots of early mornings, and because of CoE late nights.

But regardless, I wouldn't want Doctor Who to do a similar story. But I seem to be in the minority here.

From a marketing perspective I would expect demand for merchandising to dip over this year and next. For a number of reasons

1.>People don't have as much disposable income due to things like job uncertaintity.
2.>People might be more interested in buying 50th Anniversary merchandising rather than the usual releases throughout 2012.

So I think any dip in merchandising over the next 18months or so will come back in 2013.

I think he gets quite a bit of (undeserved, IMO) flak via twitter.

He could try and be a bit less condescending in future, maybe?

(And all the tweets he doesn't block are full of people kissing his arse anyway.)

The Moff tweeted:
Do I need to tell you that you can ignore the Private Eye story? No? Good! I look forward to this being called a rant.

He said that last week and the Eye mentioned as much in passing this week:

As angry Who fans bombarded the Eye with online demands that we issue an 'apology and retraction', showrunner Seven Moffat went on to the offensive. "Private Eye seems like such fun until it's YOUR friends they spreading nasty, inaccurate gossip about. How Horrible," he tweeted the following morning. Which bits of the story he considered inaccurate, he would not say.

And

Two days later, the BBC News website gave him one hell of a bounce, publishing a story with copious quotes from Cohen, putting the full blame on Moffat for the fact that there will not be a full series of Doctor Who next year: "Sherlock success will hit Doctor Who, says BBC1 Boss".

It took just minutes for a furious Moffat to strike back on Twitter: "The scheduling of the Dr Who has got NOTHING to do with Sherlock". In response to a message from fellow writer Neil Gaiman as to whether he was "being shafted", Moffat replied publicly: "It's not your imagination. Unbelievable. Unacceptable." While the Beeb amended its story to include Moffat's denial, Cohen has declined to issue any kind of clarification.

okay, am I the only one completely stumped as to why the beeb is screwing so badly with a program that's obviously extremely popular (and no doubt making them bucket loads)?

Y U NO MAKE SENSE, PEOPLE?

The ratings are again at the Colin Baker/Sylvestor McCoy level, that's why. As for merchandise, there was perhaps more for the JNT era than there was for Tom and earlier Doctors, such as the Dapol figures, the Target books etc.

Since when? The shows been pulling in over 30% of the available audience, iPlayer is at an all-time high, and BBC America Ratings are increasing.

Don't let the negative nellies convince you that smaller number of people is indicative of a slide for the show, it's indicative of the number of eyes watching TV period. If nobody's watching TV, obviously they aren't available.

Also, there were only four TV channels here in the 80's. Ratings for everything were generally higher than in today's world of cable, satellite and Freeview digital TV with their huge number of available channels.

No, I'm with you too. The BBC has already fallen way behind the times with it's outdated, and frankly damaging policy of not announcing exact airdates months in advance. We knew ages before that BBC America and Space were going to air Series 6 starting April 23; British viewers didn't know for certain until about, what, April 10? And look what's happening with Torchwood. Because the BBC thinks that announcing a show too far in advance might result in people, uh, not watching that show and watching something else (instead of using a DVR or iPlayer) UK fans are in the dark about when Miracle Day is airing over there and as such most are probably now saying "screw it - I'll download the US and Canadian feed via Filestube". So the BBC loses.

And now we have the BBC really screwing around with Doctor Who - not as far as the scheduling goes. As I mentioned in another thread, all I see is the show transitioning into a fall broadcast, and I already knew the split format was permanent. And if they decide to do a 5-episode miniseries aired over a week, that would be fantastic if it's anywhere as good as Children of Earth. But the BBC really seems to be the epitome of the left hand not paying attention to the right hand, and as a result it's pissing off fans and, it's pissing off Moffat and the Beeb could end up losing him from both DW and Sherlock if they're not careful.
