2012 Academy Awards show

Wow, still no topic yet? The show begins in just a few hours.

I guess there is not much interest this year since all the movies aren't that popular. I guess that is what happens when they don't have a LOTR or Avatar.

The only thing I'm rooting for is Rango. I don't really care about anything else. I'm expecting The Artist win big and Potter to get shut out once again.

Here are the nominations again

I'm excited for the show, but I have a question which I've asked many times before.

Why not have a category to honor films based on box office numbers. They always say they want ratings and people watching, yet why would anyone in the 18-49 demographic watch if the films nominated for best picture are ones they probably haven't seen unless they are in the film industry or something. I mean movies like Harry Potter should be honored somewhat because this is a franchise which scored huge numbers and people were even saying Alan Rickman should have Oscar consideration. Also, the people they have presenting (Such as the comedians like Tina Fay) would never have a shot at Oscar because of the films they are typically in. Hell, did Billy Chrystal ever win an academy award?

If they want people to watch, why not make it easier for people to watch. Maybe not call this "best picture" anything, but maybe "Best Box Office Film", kind of like what they've done with best Animated film.

As for who I want to see win best picture, I will be happy if The Artist won. I will be pissed to see The Tree of Life win, as that was one of the most boring films I've seen in a long time. Didn't even make it past the half hour mark.

The movies nominated at the Oscars are quite easy movies to watch. If you want a real selection of films that only professionals will see, try Cannes.

My local film critic had the same idea in the paper this week. I like the idea in theory but it could cause overlap with the other categories.

So how about being more specific and create a best genre film award. Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Film would probably cover most Box Office winners anyways.

Well, for the first time in years, I'm working on Oscar night (until 12:00 a.m.). So I guess I'll be missing it this time... unless there's somewhere online I can stream it live (or close to live). Anyone know if that's possible?

Ah well, I mostly just want to see it because I enjoy Billy Crystal as a host. I find the nominated films themselves to be a mixed bag.

Most seem to think that The Artist will win Best Picture, and I'm fine with that; it's a delightful, highly entertaining film. I was also quite charmed by Hugo, and certainly wouldn't mind if that took home the top prize (I don't expect it will, however). The Descendants is a fine film, effective as both a comedy and a drama, but it seems like a bit too much of a safe choice to me. The Tree of Life is... ambitious. Admirable. I didn't find it entirely satisfactory, but I can't deny its artistic merit. It definitely deserves some accolades, but I wouldn't say it's quite Best Picture-worthy. I haven't seen the other BP noms.

I must say, though, I'm flabbergasted that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (which received rather mediocre reviews) was nominated, but films like Drive, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Melancholia (to name a few) were shut out. I suppose not having seen EL & IC, I can't really judge fairly, but I'd wager the above films were much more deserving of a BP nod.

Then there's the performance awards. I can't, for the life of me, fathom how Tilda Swinton did not get a Best Actress nomination for her work in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Ditto Michael Fassbender in the Best Actor category for Shame.

Ah well... in any event, I still look forward to seeing who emerges victorious.

God damn it -- Cirque du Soleil gets to do "one of their biggest performances ever," but they don't let the fucking Muppets and Flight of the Conchords sing "Muppet or a Man."

I hate the Academy.

I don't think it was a weak year (and out of the nominees, The Artist, The Tree of Life and Hugo are legitimately excellent, and Moneyball and War Horse are really very, very good), and, really, I don't think the selections are terrible when looked at in isolation (outside of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which was unbelievably Godawful and has no reason for existing).

It's just that the omissions are so egregious in some cases (Drive, Michael Shannon, Michael Fassbender, etc.) that in that context, some of the BP nominations are silly.

Seacrest seems annoyed, and a bit embarrassed, by "the Dictator's" prank. He's gonna be tired of explaining it to everyone. He wasn't made a fool of, Sasha Baron Cohen was the fool. It just wasn't needed. Ryan will be talking about this for years.

Guess they need a DustBuster. Looks like they'll be tidying it up.

Lots of security for JLo.

I think the show you're looking for is the MTV awards. They give awards to the more mainstream movies. The Artist, or The Descendants would probably never make that awards show!

But the MTV Awards are irrelavent compared to the Oscars. The Oscars are like the King of all award shows.

True, If it was about box office, though smaller movies wouldn't have a chance. You realize Transformers Dark of the Moon would win best picture?

That opening with Billy Crystal being dropped in several of this years movies was really awesome. :D

My favourite of this was when he sang "Mystic River" to the tune of "Moon River", while sitting in Clint Eastwood's lap.
