2011 SotL Calendar

Wow. You're just itching to start some argument about Star Trek '09, aren't you?
Yeesh! I hate the fucking movie and I'm not shy to say it. Oh, yeah, I forgot: only flattering praise allowed or keep my mouth shut. We're not in the Trek XI forum so too damned bad.

I love the NX-01, but it's not improved at all by trying to bring it into line with other versions of the Enterprise - I don't like the addition of the secondary hull.
Hmm... I think the refit really improves a design I never liked before.

I get that you must love the original Enterprise. What other Enterprise do you like?

Do you like:
Enterprise A?
Enterprise B?
Enterprise C?
Enterprise D?
Enterprise E?
Enterprise J?

^^ Yes, I love the TOS E and the TOS shuttlecraft. I also like the TMP refit (no bloody A, B, C or whatever) as well as some other TMP designs. The 1701D has grown on me. I like the Defiant and the runabouts from DS9. That and the Reliant from TWOK were the only onscreen Starfleet ships that ever really worked for me. The rest look like careless and ungainly reinterpretations.

Speaking of careless and ungainly - I'm glad none of the original designs from Star Trek: Online have made it onto Ships of The Line.

The donut ship and flippy-nacelle runabout from the period where Perpetual were pretending to develop the game were kinda cool, though.

Yeah, I'll echo that I would never ever want to see an STO ship in the calendar. The ship designs from that game are truly fugly in the most true sense of the word.

I personally wish that the art in the calendar would reflect what the original intent was... to show us FX shots that would have been cool to see with a blank check budget, and to see concepts realized, like Andy Probert's Sphinx. I really do not want ANY fanon material in the calendar, no matter what the era. Just keep it within the members of the Trek production team.

And it doesn't always have to be exteriors... for instance, it'd be nice to see realized concepts for the insides of ships and places, like Andy Probert's designs for the interior of the 1701-D, or a TNG version of the massive lounge on Sacedock... maybe a painting of someone having a drink at a table beside the massive windows, looking out at a docked 1701-D, or the same, but at a time when the ship was still under build, at Utopia Plantita... there are many new and original things that can be done, without using fanon designs.

I wish that the new seconary hull of the NX was a bit less like the TOS E. Maybe remove the undercut on the aft. It looks a little too close to TOS instead of the first step towards it.

That said, I like the concept and don't really dislike what Doug has done.

I'm mildly amused by how pronounced the fantail is. It reminds me of my favorite little "stick-it-to-'em" in Star Trek '09, that the only part of the original universe to survive the alternate completely intact was "Enterprise." I don't know if the intent was to have the NX-01.5 have a hint of JJPrise in addition to generally trying to move closer to the Jefferies original, but I like it.

I'm all for a complete redesign of The Dee, rather than, as mentioned above, the various 'adjustments' to what, IMHO, is a really homely ship; the Galaxy class is my least favorite Enterprise - yes, even behind NX-01!

I think my two biggest issues are the diminishing neck and the stubby, rear-mounted nacelles; the latter don't convey any sense of forward movement to me, and the former just reinforces the huge disparity in size between the saucer and, well, kinda, the lower saucer! ;) It looks like Mr. Mackey on South Park, with that huge inflated head and leetle tiny neck.

Wrong thread?

I'm inclined to disagree with you about fan images, BolianAdmiral. While I don't like all of the fan shots we've gotten, the ones this year... really didn't feel out of place. Deg's connie and Clawhammer's ringship are rather nice extrapolations of things we've seen onscreen.

I do agree that it would be nice to see a direction towards the unchained VFX concept though. I know Probert had that kickass sketch of an alternate angle of the -D entering the dyson sphere.

Well, for me personally, the ringship is pretty much the only ship Clawhammer has done that I personally happen to like a lot. That's not anything against Clawhammer... he is a brilliant artist with tons of talent... but the styles he likes to see on ships are just not my personal cup of tea. But again, that's just my own taste in ship design, and nothing against Clawhammer as an artist.

I just want to see more of the actual concepts from the production team. Books like The Continuing Mission, The Art of Star Trek, and even the Phase II book and TOS Sketchbook are just overflowing with cool concepts that I'd love to see realized.

I am getting a kick out of reading everyone's perceptions of the different Trek ships. Since each person or artist has their own personal aesthetic each response is totally different. I find that fascinating.

My personal opinions... the ring ship is fantastic. I would love to have a model of her. The warbird is... awesome. She looks so imposing flipped over like that. Deg's Enterprise is yummy. I still don't really like the latest movie version of the Enterprise (her nacelles make her look like a turkey) but I love the Kelvin. Now that is nice ship. And last but not least, the NX-01 (my favorite) just looks completely weird with that secondary hull. I tried... really tried... (sorry Doug :() but I just can't seem to find anything pleasing about it.

And I have ordered my copy of the calender already. :bolian:

So you like 2 rings with a stick more then a sleek mean sharklike machine... you are crazy! ;)

I wanted to do something different as well, break away from my favorite era. The ringship plans are almost 50 years old, I tried to bring it up to 2010 standards. A long road but a rewarding one.

*Now where was I...oh yeah canceling Vesta MK2 plans, repainting MK1 for possible ani... oh I almost said it!

Like I said, Clawhammer... I'm not putting YOU down or anything... but my personal tastes in what I like in a ship design is different from what you like, and that's fine... to each his own. Like I said, you have tons of talent, and you are a great artist... but yes... I prefer the ringship to the Aventine.

John Eaves designed the 1701-E, which I LOVE, but a lot of other stuff he's done, I don't like at all, but that doesn't mean I don't think he's a great artist.

You did a great job with the ringship, and it's likely my favorite image in the calendar.

As I recall, Drexler had a fairly virulent reaction to the idea that the NX-01.5 had anything to do with the Abramsprise when asked on his blog – so much so that I'm actually surprised to see anything form the new film in this calender. (Though that could be due to orders from on high.)

Is Drexler actually editing the calendar this year? I know it used to be Margaret Clark's beat, so I assumed Jamie Costas was in charge of it now.

Yeah, I enjoy that a little bit too.

if you like to think so, but i'm fairly convinced that "Enterprise" was never in the same universe as TOS, etc. some twisted mirror universe, certainly.

Whoever it is should try to get some more balance into it.

Both subject and quality wise. There's too much TOS era this time. And there are extremly high quality shots like the nuEnterprise and Kelvin, and then there are extreme lows like that kitbash image.

And next time, especially with a cover like this, I'd actually like to see the cover expanded inside the calendar.

You're mistaken. The folks who get to make that call - the people who own it - made it. Period, full stop. One can like or dislike that, but one can also kick the ocean - makes the same difference.

The basic frustration that some fans have with the new movie is a little deeper than that, but it boils down to the same situation and the same powerlessness.

Well, we also have the option to spill oil in the ocean, you know.

Keeps people from going to the trendy new beaches that we don't like.
