2011 NFL Season - A New Game

God damn the Packers are good.

Correction: Their offense is good (thanks to Aaron Rodgers being a Football God, throwing to an absolutely world-class corps of receivers -- and I speak as a lifelong Bears fan).

Their second-half defense is beyond atrocious. Watch that two-point conversion near the end of the fourth quarter: Nearly every player blew his assignment.

I could make a similar case for the Pats.

Their offense is good (thanks to Tom Brady being a Football God, throwing to an absolute scrap heap patchwork corps of receivers and two beasts at TE.

Their third down defense is beyond atrocious. Watch those forth quarter scoring drives the Colts put together. Nearly every player blew his assignment, and his load.

Did I read that right that Cam Newton caught a touchdown pass yesterday - how did that happen?
He caught a pass (thrown by Legedu Naanee, I think), but it wasn't for a touchdown. Just one of those trick plays that coaches like to thrown in once in a while. I'm more impressed by Newton's three rushing touchdowns. He may not be the best QB, but for fantasy football, he's a stud.

I am never going to bet on the Vikings again (at least not this year). Their secondary is so bad they even made Tebow look like a passing QB.

Tim Tebow finished the weekend with the league's highest passer rating for a QB. He was 10-15 for 202 and 2-0, finishing with a 149.3! Unreal. If he'd not thrown those two passes out of bounds (one of them on that last drive), his passer rating would have been a perfect 158.3. Few NFL quarterbacks have ever gotten perfect.

The scariest part was that the passes that he threw incomplete were actually good passes. On that final drive, the pass in the endzone slipped out of Thomas' hands.

Jim McMahon caught a TD pass from Walter Payton once. Trick plays can be fun.

Backward pass to a WR, who then threw to Newton on the other side, who got so open he didn't really seem to understand what happened, and jogged out of bounds.

Because I'm sure it hasn't been pointed out enough this season, a great many of these primetime games we've gotten this season have been absolutely terrible.

Caught a couple of minutes of the Chargers postgame while driving home from Jamba Juice (tastes great, and you can pretend that it's healthy!), anyway, the local radio geniuses declared that San Diego was going to win the division, and talked about how giddy they were with excitement.

I can't see any way they end up disappointed.

Understandable. If beating a team with no coach, no owner, potentially no town, and issues all over the roster don't confirm that your team is starting to bounce back, I don't know what will.

So how much of a mudstomping do we think Norv Turner gave his team just before halftime for AGAIN sucking up most of the first half and losing to a team like the Jags? Whatever he did, it sure worked.

In order to win the division, they not only have to win out the season, but beat Oakland in week 17. If they lose a single game, they're out of it.

Oakland or Denver, meanwhile, only have to win 2 of their last 4.

And this week, Denver gets a Chicago team without Matt Forte and without Cutler, let alone without Orton, that scored only 3 points last week.

Just purchased two shares of stock in the Green Bay Packers, so now I can call myself a team owner. I inherited five shares from my brother, but I've yet to figure out how to transfer those into my own name.

It was nice to see the Jets win again. I was chuckling when the stands emptied and the Jets fans in the stands started the J-E-T-S chants.

There is nothing quite like Doug and OB after a Bears loss. They have bled the blue and orange for decades and are a joy to listen to.
