2011 NFL Season - A New Game

Looks like Indy is gonna blow that huge lead.

Yeah I'm not sure who those guys in the red helmets were today. Especially the QB.

They're the guys playing one of the top contenders in the Suck for Luck sweepstakes. That was a pretty awful collapse on their home field on Indy's part.

I'm afraid the Chiefs little two game winning streak has probably already put them out of the Suck for Luck campaign. There are some truly godawful teams out there this year (and yes that includes the Chiefs.)

On the other hand, not seeing a very many, if any, more W's on the Chiefs schedules.

Ugh. Thanks for taking a step back Titans - and to the Steelers too, bleurgh. Hasslbeck continues to play really well of course, but Johnson could've used more runs to get going. 49 passes to 18 runs? Way to put us in a big hole early, defense. Oh well, bring on next week.

"Dream Team"... :guffaw:

Why exactly are people so fascinated by what Vince Young of all people think? If Michael Vick had used those words, this would make a lot more sense. But, to me, this is a silly thing to keep bringing up.

QFT. I'm so damned tired of that moniker, and it's just one more reason to hate that idiot Vince Young painting a target on the Eagles back. Though the Philly schaudenfreude in general is pretty tiresome.

I wasn't as bummed this week though - I'm really happy for the Bills and I'm glad they're still leading the AFC East. Next week I have to root for the Pats after all...

Oh, and now I apparently have to root against the Broncos from here out. That makes me sad.

The Niners seem to be a completely different team this year..

Can a head coach really create that much of a turnaround?

I want to see Tebow succeed. He seems like a cool guy and he's obviously a hard worker. Who cares if he fits the "type." Just let him go out there and do what he does best, but don't be afraid to open up the playbook to him. They're never going to be able to see his value if they only let him hand the ball off or run it.
The thing I liked about Tebow playing the second half is that it showed how defective and idiotic the "Tebow Package" is in the way they've used it this season and last season. Whenever the TP is put into action, the opposing defenses do nothing but gaurd against the run. This is because it is always going to be a run. And so obviously, the TP rarely worked out last year and failed both times it was used this year.

Tebow's strength isn't running. It's scrambling, keeping plays alive, and doing things with his legs when things go to hell. His first run play as the actually QB went for more yards than most of the previous TP uses, including last season. Tebow's strengths really shine through when the defense knows that they needs to defend against the pass, the RB, and Tebow's legs.

With all that said, he really needs to get his accuracy to be getting better. A lot of his passes, especially early on, were just ugly. Fortunately, he didn't put any into anyplace to really get them intercepted, but he never really made life easy on his WRs. But, I expect that to come from more time with the first team and more attention from the coaches.

The same problem happened back when the Eagles had McNabb but would bring in Vick for the Wild Cat. With very few exceptions, it was always a run for three yards. These plays might make more sense if you could trick the opponent into not knowing who was on the field. But, aside from that, they have limited circumstances.

Not a case of turnaround, but look at what Tony LaRussa has done over the years with injury riddled Cardinals baseball teams.

Though I think these cases are pretty rare.

Nothing like the Jets offense to right all that's wrong with your team's D. Oh wait, they still scored 21...shit.

Nice to see the Pats be able to get by a stifiling, pressuring defense for once. Good game Law Firm.

There exists a rather perverse mentality among a lot of NFL fans to take joy in Vick's failures, even though there have been plenty of other pricks in active roles -- players, executives and owners -- throughout the history of the league. I've never been a fan of Vick, simply because while he has legs and a cannon, he has no accuracy whatsoever.

His off-the-field stuff is deplorable, but Leonard Little and Donte Stallworth have killed people through their drunk driving, and I don't see people taking like Dorian Thompson taking glee in their on-field missteps. (Well, the latter, since Little is retired.)
Wanting Vick to fail in football is perverse? Give me a break. Wishing someone to stab him as he gets into his car is perverse.

The guy did something horrible, and it doesn't seem like he's genuinely sorry. Total phony. Remember, his only regret was that his prison sentence was too long.

Personally I wasn't happy to see Leonard Little or Donte Stallworth make any money after what they did... but shit, presumably they didn't drive drunk with the intention of hurting anyone. They may have substance abuse issues which is a whole 'nother thing. I personally don't give them a pass.

Fuckwad Vick and those dogs on the other hand... He wanted to abuse and kill them. That was fun to him.

Not to mention the 'most electrifying player in the NFL' had a much higher profile than those two, especially to casual fans.

So you have Vick, the new face of the Eagles franchise. You have the offseason hype machine declaring them Super Bowl favorites because they caught Dan Snyder-itis. You have a fanbase with a less-than-stellar repuation. It's really a perfect shit storm. And for a lot of NFL fans their disastrous start is so far the feel good story of the year.

Regarding whether he is genuinely sorry: Vick has said all the right things. Most people who say he doesn't seem sorry tend to use the argument that someone who did something like that couldn't change and are only sorry they got caught. That's circular (basically, he can't be sorry for what he did because of what he did). Now maybe he isn't sorry, but you can't use what he's said or done as proof of this.

Worst case is a sort of Pascal's Wager. If he isn't sorry, he's still a major fundraiser for animal shelters and an outspoken critic telling people not to engage in animal fighting. This certainly isn't a bad thing.

Holy crap, that first quarter of the Lions/Bears game was ridiculous. Flags everywhere. False starts, neutral zone infractions. A phantom pass interference call (which was challenged and overturned, and rightly so), a bullcrap roughing the passer penalty. Sixty combined offensive yards, sixty-nine combined penalty yards. The Bears wasted not one, not two, but all three timeouts before the first quarter was even over!

Good grief.

^I'll probably go back in a little bit, but I stopped watching at the end of the first quarter. Stopping every couple of plays for a penalty was just painful and boring.

My wife was on the couch, and I was on the floor playing with the dog during the 1st. At one point, she rolled over and asked groggily how much time was left in the half. I said there's about a minute left in the quarter. She said oh good let's go to bed at halftime, this game sucks. I said the quarter, not the half. We went to bed anyway. I'm just up to let the mutt out.

What a shitty game.

Somebody want to volunteer to go over to Timby's and remove all sharp objects?

Imaginary Lovie's excuse: "We're going to study how to improve our offense and defense in practice this week."

No, he didn't actually say that (or if he did, I didn't see it). But you KNOW the coaching staff is going to come up with some complete bullshit excuses like that, all the while ignoring everything that's actually wrong with the team. They got completely schooled tonight by a Lions team that played just well enough to not stink up the joint like the Bears did.

So... think anybody was predicting before the season that the best game of Week 6 would be Niners-Lions?

In other news, the Broncos have officially given up on the season.

Will they try and trade Orton? Indy anyone?

I'm only hoping the futility continues and they don't screw themselves out of a chance to draft a real quarterback. Exciting games they still lose, fine. Winning games they have no business winning - not helpful in the slightest.

Suck for Luck.
