2011 MLB Season Discussion

^He thinks a season without a world championship is a slump. Who knows what he did the season the Yankees didn't make it to the playoffs....

What are people's thoughts on the "unwritten rules" of Baseball? Shane Victorino got hit last night, apparently because Jimmy Rollins stole a base while the Phillies were up significantly. I just don't see why ensuring you're winning the game should be against these rules. It's not like the Phillies said to the Giants "OK, we'll stop trying to tack on more runs, you stop trying to score and come back." It never seems to work that way with unwritten rules. The same could be said a few weeks ago where the guy tried to bunt for a hint in a no-hitter. I'm more sympathetic, since it's such an accomplishment, but that game wasn't out of reach.

Anyway, there was a bench clearing brawl as a result and likely suspensions on both teams. It seems a bit of a SanFran-Philly rivalry might be starting as long as both teams stay good.

I believe in some of the unwritten rules, sure, but some I don't.

For one, ALWAYS try to increase your score. Score's 9-2? Well, teams have come back to win from seven point deficits before.

At the time, I think it was only 5-2 as well. It might have been 6-2.

Now it's possible that wasn't the reason he was hit. Hell, it might have been an accident, it just doesn't seem likely. Anyway, it also seems like bench clearing brawls are part of the rules. They rarely end with any actual injuries, so they come off very staged. Still, in my mind, it's preferable that something like that were avoided.

Regarding the "don't bunt when a pitcher's throwing a no-hitter" thing, I had no problem with Aybar trying to bunt his way on during Verlander's no-hit bid. At the time, it was the eighth inning, and the Tigers were only up by three runs, and IIRC the Angels ended up losing 3-2. If it had been the ninth inning, however, then IMO that's when the "unwritten rule" part comes in, and trying to bunt to get onto base at that point wouldn't have been okay. I know, it's weird and kind of dumb, but...that's baseball for you. :p

^ Personally, I think it would even be okay if you're in the ninth inning. You're out there to win the game, period. You're not there to help some guy on the other team accomplish something, and if the best way to get on base and get a run is to bunt, then the batter should do so.

There are times when the Giants play where I wonder how in the heck they won the World Series last year. It's almost a cyclical thing regarding them and their offense. When the offense get's going, they can really go, but when you have times like this where the offense shuts down, they're like the worst team in Baseball. Really feel bad for Matt Cain today as well. He pitched a hell of a game, but the Giants give up 2 runs early and it was over. I know they can be the come back kids, but I really wished they would have shown up a bit for this series with the Phils.

Hope they win tomorrow as I'm going to the game and Timmy is on the mound.

Also, has Carlos Beltran just shut down? His performance wasn't what I had in mind when the Giants got him. Kind of wish he would have provided more a spark than he's shown.

I'd also say that a no hitter is a bit less of an accomplishment when the other team stops trying to get hits.

The issue of "running up the score" comes up a lot in hockey too. Regardless of the sport, if you're professionals you should play to win; that means scoring as much as you possibly can. I think the aversion to it comes from little league and things like that. There's no honour in kicking the shit out of a team that conceivably could have no chance of even saving face.

But in pro sports? They're pros for a reason and any team could hypothetically come back at any time. I've seen the Jays blow enough leads this year to know that sometimes an 8 run cushion just isn't enough. You're out there to win and as long as you aren't doing anything underhanded you should score as much as the other guys will let you.

I'm a perfect 4-0 when going to Giants games this season. That's awesome.

Seriously, good game today and good time out at AT&T. Sat in the right field View level (Section 313) and watched Lincecum be the Ace we come to expect everytime he's out on the mound. Also good to see Keppinger get a hot bat today. He had some liners in his 4-4 day which is a good thing for the second guy. I'm still a bit iffy on Beltran though, and now we have this wrist snaffu that might even more affect his performance. Still, Timmy was outstanding today, Wilson came in to shut things down, and it was a fun game and the Giants are still in first with some easier teams coming up. Not too shabby.

HA! I know, right.

Small world and coincidence, I was there on the opposite side of the field (section 132) from you! I just got home. And the Giants have the same record for the four games I've attended...since AT&T opened.

GREAT game to cash in my birthday gift with!

The gift being for me and a friend to go to the game by bus that picked us up in Orland on the way from Redding.

I was wondering (SVD or Flux), do the Giants have a pitcher ready to go in the farm system that could come in and be a reasonable 5th starter. It's gotten to the point were if Zito or Sanchez is pitching, it's a loss. To lose a series to the pirates and have an atrocious homestand is unacceptable for a team that was world champions last year. I know Scherholtz and Beltran were injured, but this team can't hit if their lives depended on it. Oh, and 19 consecutive solo home runs isn't really a stat worth celebrating. It's a stat that says this team is afraid to manufacture runners on base or in scoring position.

Dunno, Tomalak, I don't keep track of the minor league system.

I do agree with your assessment of Zito and Sanchez. Neither of them would go on a post-season roster at this point.

I do home this is just pessimism and not premonition, but it's looking a lot like 2011 Giants and Diamondbacks = 2010 Padres and Giants, in those exact roles :(

Gah, perish the thought!

Carlos Zambrano got shelled, then ejected, and after the game he cleaned out his locker and said he was retiring.
