2011 MLB Season Discussion

And it took exactly 9 games for the Braves' shitty middle relief to show up. We didn't need these "veterans" in the bullpen.

How does it feel to be Miguel Tajada. You have to sit on the sidelines and watch your teammates get world series rings (He was a Padre last year) and then to end the game, he has the walk off hit after Rasmus drops the ball. What a way to cap another great night at AT&T Park. Two home games, two exciting finishes. If this is what the season is going to be like, bring it on.

Going to tonight's Twins/Oakland game with a group from a local bar. Not looking forward to the bus ride, though. It only takes an hour to get to Target Field, but it'll take everyone at least 2 hours to find the bus after the game.

This is why I like the game day trains to Gillette Stadium. The make it clear if you're not on the train half an hour after the game ends, you're walking home.

Yeah, if I was driving myself, I would have considered taking the light rail from Mall of America to Target Field. It's about the same distance to drive there, but parking is plentiful (and free).

The Twins really need to get their offense going soon.

Great argument for using the instant replay in baseball in Anaheim tonight.   :scream: :scream: :scream:

NO. FUCKING. SHIT! I was unrestrained in my fury over that call. Worst call since Joyce. There. I said it.

Honestly? I think it was worse. Joyce's call stopped a perfect game, yeah, but it didn't change the outcome of the game, and it's one thing to screw up an out call on a baserunner, but another entirely to make an arbitrary out that costs a team a run in the 12th inning.

clint, it was 5-5 at the top of 12, the Jays had two outs, and men on second and third. Adam Lind was on third and Yunel Escobar was on second. Edwin Encarnacion hit a weak grounder to short, Callaspo comes in to field it and hesitates a moment as he sees Escobar going for third. He steps around him, and throws off-target to first, Encarnacion is safe. Then Bob Davidson calls Escobar out for interference, which was ridiculous.

In short, Escobar stayed on the baseline, never touched Callaspo, and made no effort to get in the way of the play—he just runs steadily from second to third. I'm still angry that he got away with that... Davidson has to be the single worst umpire in the Majors. Here's the video, if you want to see for yourself.

While he seems to be an equal opportunity shitty umpire, it's worth noting that he has an impressive pedigree when it comes to fucking the Jays up the ass: He's the guy who blew the triple play call in the 1992 World Series.

I've watched that video several times and I don't see what had supposedly happened. That the runner has to yield to a fielder is stupid anyway as it seems to favor the fielding team over the offensive team. I'd just say fuck it and let what happens happen.

But the MLB is convoluted as fuck with stupid rules.

^ Nothing happened. It was a phantom call, basically, and amounts to the umpire tampering with the outcome of the game, IMO.

FYI, Red Sox: you have to cross ALL FOUR BASES in order to score a run! :scream:

Goddamn, I hate it when the offense wastes an excellent outing by the starting pitcher.

Well, as said, it's a good example of why there should be an instant replay/challenges in baseball. Maybe a "challenge" can cost the team an error, an out, or something (like how challenges in the NFL cost a TO if it doesn't work out) or calls have to be made by two umpires and not just one guy making a guess out of something he saw happen out of the corner of his eye.

They really do need to figure something out. It would be useful on regular out calls. Trouble is, it isn't really feasible on the type of play that happened in Anaheim. It's purely a judgment call in a case like that. This particular call was obviously bogus but how can you quantitatively review something like that? It could get kind of messy.

Doesn't college baseball have another umpire up in a booth who takes a quick look at the replay of a questionable call, then radios down to the home plate umpire to tell him whether or not it was correct? IIRC it only takes a couple seconds. Why not use the same system in MLB?
