2011 MLB Season Discussion

Someone mentioned this morning that folks really need to watch when Roy Halladay pitches against the Reds. 3 starts ago, the Reds rookie pitcher Travis Wood took a perfect game into the 9th inning. 2 starts ago was the no hitter Halladay threw in the playoffs. Then last night, the game goes 19 innings and the starting 2nd baseman gets the win.

Just got to repeat the stat I heard. Wilson Valdez is the first player to start a game in the field and then win the game as a pitcher since 1923 when Babe Ruth did it.

:( :( :( :( :(

CRAP CRAP CRAP

Tonight turned from excitement to horror at AT&T Park. There was a pop up, Scherholtz was trying to make a play at home, and Cousins rammed Buster Posey who's leg didn't go the way it was supposed to. I was listening to the game, and it sounded like a clean play but I hate to see that happen to anyone, let alone a star player of the team I root for, and a hot young star in the league.

I hope he's ok, but I feel sick right now. It sounded serious, but hopefully how it sounds and what it is are totally opposite.

Other than that, it was an exciting finish. Giants tied it up late, Marlins score the go ahead and winning run. All that though is irrelevant. :(

I was there at the park for that game last night, and from where I was sitting, that was anything but a clean play. ALl of the people saying it was clean because Posey was blocking the plate are full of crap. Look at the video...he was NOT blocking the late. That's why he had to sweep to his left to try to apply the tag (which would have been futile anyway since he didn't have the ball in the first place) yet Cousins veers to his left to purposely ram Posey. I don't think he intended to hurt Buster as severely as he did, and I am sure he feels like shit...but as well he should. He's a subpar player barely hitting over .100 who was only on base due to Fielder's Choice because he made a shitty unproductive bunt and was trying to prove himself and keep his job.

I'd put money on it that if Mota makes the play at first and Stanton ends up being the guy making that play at home...sure, the Marlins probably still win, but we'd still have Posey in the lineup.

I will say this..that 4-run come back in the 9th was an amazing thing to witness...too bad it all seemed so pointless after Posey left the field.

He may feel bad and be a San Francisco native and all but...I don't care...fuck you, Scott Cousins.

^ Was there any retaliation? Cousins better watch the fuck out the next time he steps up to the plate against SF.

And I have yet to actually see the play as it occurred, but I have seen pics. Posey was not blocking the damn plate. Obviously it's going to be split down the middle - Marlins fans will think it was a clean play, Giants fans won't. I am not a Giants fan but I agree with them. It was a dirty, bush-league play.

Not that I know of. Cousins isn't a starter (seeing as he sucks ass) so I don't believe there was ever any chance. I can't say I would have seen fault in Vogelsong plunking him had he made a plate appearance.

Edit: For those who haven't seen video, here's a .GIF of the incident. Anybody see a guy with 28 on his back on top of the plate? No? What's that? The plate is completely visible, due to the fact that there's nobody on top of it? Yeah...clean play my ass.

He's apparently interested but would need to spend some time in the Minors to get in shape...or at least his version of being in shape. If you think he was slow when he was playing for the Giants last season, just imagine his speed after a couple months on the couch.

Besides, bringing back Molina feels like going back to an old girlfriend you dumped simply because your new girlfriend left you...or got her leg broken by some asshole.

Looking at that play, It was a clean play, but an unnecessary clean play. Listening to both sides, it's such a bang bang thing that Cousins should have taken the right lane, but it happens so fast that all he was trying to do was score. It's a play that happens in Baseball and unfortunately it's part of the game.

I could see this being Baseball's version of NHL's rule 48 though, which talks about blindside hits to the head. It's going to be debated, people are overreacting to it because it happened to a star player, but I think in a week or so, we're going back to the status quo. I don't want to see a rule change, even though I am still saddened that the Giants lost Posey for an extended length of time.

That's the bit: not dirty, exactly, but more harmfull than it needs to be. How the game is set up, though.

Ask yourself if you honestly think Cousins had time to process that Posey DIDN'T have the ball anymore, especially since Posey swept to tag him anyway. Under those circumstances, he's still got it in his mind that he's gotta try and break up the play to be safe. Cousins landed directly on home plate, so not like he chased Posey over to 1B and tackled him or anything.

Can almost blame Posey for not bailing out once he didn't have the ball. He stayed for the same reason Cousins did: try and break up the play. He tried to block the plate (because of the throw, didn't get all the way into it), hoping he could knock him away and then find the ball in time. Didn't pan out.

Sucks if you're a Giants fan, but not a dirty play. Can ask whether the rules need to change to prevent it, but as they stand, play was fine.

Honestly, if they want to change the rules so you can't go at the catcher, should have to be a corresponding rule that you can't try to block the plate, either. If you're allowed to contact me to prevent me from scoring, I should be allowed to contact YOU to try and score anyway (within reason).

So Giants rookie Brandon Crawford comes up to bat, his third plate appearance of the game and he's 0-2. Bases loaded. Giants down 3-1 to the Brewers. I turn to my dad and say, "Sure would be nice if his first Major League hit were a Grand Slam."

Not 5 seconds later, on the first pitch of the at bat.

Boom.

Called it.

That was exactly what the team needed. It still hurts losing Posey, but man was that sweet. Even better is the guy is a product of the Giants' own farm system and grew up right here in the Bay Area.

Yeah. As much as the Posey thing hurts, the team has to move on and play out the season and that moment was a nice way to end what was a terrible week. Hopefully this lights something under the Giants offense (Would like to see some consistency though) and it was nice that it ended like a 6 game winning streak Milwaukee was having.

Well, Jose Bautista just became the quickest player to the 20 HR mark in Blue Jays franchise history, after 44 games. The previous record holder was George Bell, who did it in 53 games during the 1987 season.

Yep. The guy's a beast, no two ways about it.

And yet it's Corey Patterson (!?) with the heroics in the 14th today.

^ I've been pleasantly surprised by Patterson, myself. Considering his journeyman history, he's been proving himself rather consistently useful in an everyday role.

I convinced my wife to sleep with no pants on last night, and she used to live in Seattle. Something in the water there maybe.

If any of the streakers was sans meatwhistle, please post pics.

My god, Jo-Jo Reyes finally got a win! Only took him 29 starts.

I guess it helped that the Jays put up 11 runs, even though he pitched a complete game and only gave up 1. I swear it was like watching a duck speak

^ I've been rooting for him, of late. He had an awful start to the year, but he's had a string of good starts lately with no-decisions. Be nice for him to get on the Corey Patterson train and start turning things around.
