2011 MLB Season Discussion

The Braves played the Angels for the 8th time ever and evened the series at 4-4! :D

Which reminds me.... the interleague schedules are dumb. It seems like we keep rotating through the same 5-6 teams instead of playing the rest of the AL.

30 games against the Orioles but only 6 against the Mariners? :wtf:

I hate the unbalanced schedule. Yeah you get Giants Dodgers a lot and that's fine, but we don't really need Giants D-Backs or every team in the NL Central playing the Pirates 18 times. Seems like the rivalries between divisions are gone because of this and it's a shame. Would much rather have more games like Cubs/Dodgers, or Giants/Cardinals.

They want to try and create interleague rivals. Yankees and Mets are a good example.

That's all well and good, but most teams don't have a natural interleague rival like the Mets and Yankees or the Cubs and Sox. And regardless, you can't establish shit if you're only playing maybe one series a year against a team.

There are home and home for most of the series. The Braves and Red Sox did it for several years until it was stopped for some reason.

Yankees/Mets
Cardinals/Royals
White Sox/Cubs
Reds/Indians
Rays/Marlins
Astros/Rangers
Giants/A's
Dodgers/Angels
Orioles/Nationals
Twins/Brewers

That's a lot of good games with bragging rights.

Braves and Red Sox seem to have been replaced by Phillies and Red Sox.

Essentially, they had the Canadian matchup (Montreal and Toronto), the New York matchup (Mets and Yankees), and the Florida matchup (Marlins and Rays). The rest were kind of a mixed bag, but it made some sense to have Phillies and Orioles play each other, since they were at least close by (and all the Phillies fans enjoyed Camden Yards over the Vet). However, when Montreal moved to Washington, it made more sense for the Nationals to play the O's. So then they had to decide whether it should be Phillies-Red Sox or Braves-Red Sox with the other playing Toronto. Obviously, recently, Phillies-Red Sox have made more sense as far as ratings go.

That being said, I can't say for certain what they are doing this year.

ETA: Phillies play Sox for a series, the Blue Jays for a series (Fuck You, Joe Carter), and the A's for a series (Philly team vs. former Philly team, not that anyone cares). No home and home, though.

Giants Swept the A's this weekend. That's fantastic, and Lincecum last night was dealing.

Looking forward to this week as I am going to Petco and Angels Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday. Now that Hockey season is close to ending, time to focus on Baseball.

So here's a few photos from Progressive Field. It was an awesome park, and was made even more beautiful by the way the sun set behind the Cleveland skyline as the game went on.

Here's the view from our seats, both towards the field and out towards the city:

And a shot that I'm impressed I managed on a point and shoot:

And here's a few more from PNC Park. I don't have quite as many, as the game was a sellout (the Cleveland game was about 70% sold) so it was tougher to wander around during the game.

^ There, I re-upped them, and that fixed the size issue.

Also, the fields weren't that empty... my shot towards home at Progressive probably shows the only part that was half-full, besides the outfield bleachers. It was a pretty respectable crowd, around 31,000 people. PNC was a sellout:

And one of my worst. Well, at least, it was my first experience with sports disappointment, which continued with the Flyers a few years later, and the Eagles and Sixers as well. I was fairly young then, but it's good to get used to disappointment in sports early.

Ugh, the Jays' bullpen is so schizophrenic. They're either lights out or coughing up runs like crazy. After a really solid 7 inning performance by Romero against the Yankees last night, Rauch and Francisco let it get away in the 8th and 9th.

I realize it's not ridiculously shameful to blow a 3 run lead at Yankee Stadium but a little more consistency would be nice. I'd be curious to see whose bullpen has blown up the most leads in MLB. I bet the Jays are up there.

^ Yeah, that was annoying. I was watching the first half of the game, and then had to leave, and it sucked returning to 2 runs for the Yankees in the eighth and ninth.

:( :( :( :( :(

CRAP CRAP CRAP

Tonight turned from excitement to horror at AT&T Park. There was a pop up, Scherholtz was trying to make a play at home, and Cousins rammed Buster Posey who's leg didn't go the way it was supposed to. I was listening to the game, and it sounded like a clean play but I hate to see that happen to anyone, let alone a star player of the team I root for, and a hot young star in the league.

I hope he's ok, but I feel sick right now. It sounded serious, but hopefully how it sounds and what it is are totally opposite.

Other than that, it was an exciting finish. Giants tied it up late, Marlins score the go ahead and winning run. All that though is irrelevant. :(

Someone mentioned this morning that folks really need to watch when Roy Halladay pitches against the Reds. 3 starts ago, the Reds rookie pitcher Travis Wood took a perfect game into the 9th inning. 2 starts ago was the no hitter Halladay threw in the playoffs. Then last night, the game goes 19 innings and the starting 2nd baseman gets the win.

Just watching my Twitter feed and unofficial reports have the injury listed as a broken leg and torn Ligaments. Not good at all. :(
