2009's Sci-Fi Films To Watch For

None around here. Maybe that was an early Oscar bait release.

The second movie, "Stingray Sam" is one that I can't believe I hadn't heard about until now, as it's by writer/director/actor/musician Cory McAbee, whose 2001 film "The American Astronaut" is one of my favorite cult movies of all time. Like "The American Astronaut", "Stingray Sam" is a sci-fi/comedy/musical/western. Yes, a sci-fi/comedy/musical/western, shot in black and white, on a shoestring budget. The plot synopsis for "Stingray" is (from IMDb):

A dangerous mission reunites STINGRAY SAM with his long lost accomplice, The Quasar Kid. Follow these two space convicts as their earn their freedom in exchange for the rescue of a young girl who is being held captive by the genetically designed figurehead of a very wealthy planet.

Sorry for the necromancy, but I just saw this at the MD Film Festival.

It was really cool and I highly recommend it if you get a chance to see it. It was structured as 5 1-act serial installments narrated by David Hyde Pierce with inter-cuts of these odd little collage flash-backs to deliver the exposition. The structure actually forced a much clearer narrative than McAbee gave us in American Astronaut. The songs were good, some of them were awesome, especially the Lullaby and Peg-leg Dad, though I have to say that the music wasn't quite as good or memorable as the soundtrack to American Astronaut, but then how can you beat "Hey Boy"?

Cool. I will definitely watch it eventually. However, since moving to Australia, I've noticed that Australia kinda sucks for limited release movies. Looks like there's a film festival here in Syndey next month, but I'm not holding my breath on Stingray Sam being screened there. If nothing else, I'll just wait for the DVD. Hopefully, the DVD release doesn't take as long as it did for American Astronaut.

I'm almost done watching the 20 episodes of South African/Canadian made SciFi: CHARLIE JADE.

YOu have never seen a Hero want so much to get back to the Corporation dominated and Polluted Alphaverse where his C3 Sex Slave/Concubine: Jasmine has been left behind and Doesnt care that the nasty parallel universe spanning Corporation that is plundering resources from our Universe (and others) to our detriment.
