2009 Calendars

I'd love to have a SotL calendar devoted entirely to ships, stations, and events from the books.

Andrew Probert started a thread in the Trek Art forum awhile back, asking for opinions, since the 2009 calendar seemed to disappoint many:

Here's his take on the sum of responses (message #108 of the thread, even though the discussion lingered on into the 220's):

Your rather impressive response (click the view-post arrow) pretty well sums up a general consensus for the desire to see already established ships, for the most part, including everything from background ships in space battles to ships & settings described in novels,... encompassing ALL of the franchise including TAS.

And within that context, something new, occasionally, won't be unappreciated.

So,... if I got that pretty much right, then I'm good to go;... forever :techman:

Thanks, Andrew-

So even if upcoming SotL calendars aren't specifically "from the novels", a number of the artists who work on it are aware that at least part of the SotL audience would like to see such things.

Emperor Kalan: You are right indeed. While doing entirely new stuff is fun, and might give ship design some new directions to explore, I also see the need to back the image up by some story, either in book or screen form, as long as it is known or described in canon/semi canon most of us will easier connect and appreciate these ships. I promise my next image will have such a connection.

I agree! I would especially like to see some artwork of the Vesta-class. Hopefully, it will be created for a future novel. Perhaps we might even get a new Pocket Books contest like the one they did for the Titan.

Hey, could the August 2009 ship be a Vesta-class? It is titled "Around the Quadrant in Eighty Days" and it is shown inside a quantum slipstream. As we know from the Star Trek Destiny novels, the Vesta-class was an experimental class equipped with a prototype Quantum Slipstream Drive.

Sunbari1:

The first concept image of the Vesta class has been released a couple of days ago at Trekmovie.com. I'm still working on it. It will be featured on the 2010 SOTL calendar.

The August 2009 image is from the U.S.S. Spirit, a small ship with 4 decks and a length of 110 meters. The Spirit was designed as a testbed for QSD.

I love the original series calendar. My mom has been getting them for me for Hanukkah for as long as I can remember. This year was no different. She handed me that gift wrapped item while I was vacationing back home and I joked, "I wonder what this is". It's been a long running joke in our family.
