2008 Star Trek Ornament..?

Superman

Fleet Captain
I was thinking today that it's been a while since we had a really exciting Hallmark starship ornament.

Do you guys think one of the Trek ornaments for 2008 will be the new Enterprise?

The ornaments usually hit the streets around October, and I assume pics of the Enterprise will be public by then.

What do you think? I'm going to buy two if they are made...:D

\S/

I think the Hallmark people would be nuts if they didn't secure the new ship for the 2008 ornament. But I confess I have no idea how these things work.

I agree, it would very much be in Hallmark's best interest to have the new E as their ornament this year.

I might have to break down and shell out the $32.00 for it (or whatever their asking price this year is).

Hopefully they'll get right on that shit this year; usually there's been a one-year delay between the debut of a "hero" ship and its appearance as an ornament (Voyager premiered in Jan. 1995, Voyager ornament in 1996; DS9: "The Search" in 1994, Defiant ornament in 1997; First Contact in 1996, Enterprise-E ornament in 1998; no Deep Space Nine station ornament until 2001; Enterprise in 2001; die-cast NX-01 in 2002).

The fact that the catalog is usually released in July and the ornaments themselves available starting in October may be a strike against Hallmark, depending on how much Paramount and Abrams want to keep the exact details of the ship under wraps, though I'm sure we'll see a lot more in the trailer that plays in front of Iron Man and Indy 4.

In the past, Hallmark has said that the sculpting and approvals process is paced across 18 months or so, so the 2008 ornaments have already been commissioned.

They got stuck with the "Nemesis" Reman vessel one year, too late to stop the ornament's production and switch to another model after "Nemesis" tanked at the box office.

In any case, if the ST XI ship looks rather like the TOS ship, there won't be enough distinguishing features.

That would seem to answer my observation above about the time delay. :p

In fact, isn't the new one usually released in the on-line catalogue around this time of year?

So, anyone care to guess what the 2008 ornament will be? I'm hoping for the Excelsior, finally. I mean, come on, they did the tri-nacelled Enterprise-D from AGT last year, that should open the flood gates to anything.

There's no way Hallmark is working fast enough to start production on the new NCC-1701 in time for the 2008 holiday season. Plus, the question still remains of how much of the ship Abrams and Paramount will release to the public prior to the film's release. They're going to try to keep details as top-secret as possible, and having the new ship spoiled as a Christmas ornament would just be really lame.

I suspect the 2008 ornaments will be underwhelming as per usual. I can't remember the last time they offered something I was excited about.

Well, there's no law that says licensors haven't seen the final design, right?

Hallmark needed to have seen it six months ago. That was when they decided on their 2008 ornaments.

IIRC, the companies signing to do ST XI toys and other tie-ins only made their agreements about three months ago and most have yet to be announced to the public.

Again, I'm saying, are we assuming that is impossible?

A toy listserv I belong to got the "18 months" quote from Hallmark last time they were being berated for missing the boat on a movie-related ornament. The way their company has to plan its stuff in advance does not allow for making Christmas ornaments to coincide with movies that are getting a Christmas release, since Christmas ornaments have to be in warehouses by about May or June of the same year.

It's too late to release a 2008 Christmas ornament of an embargoed design in December 2008, because the shops want to start selling Christmas ornaments in the July.

What about the shuttlepod from ST:TMP, the one Scotty takes Kirk to the Ent in. It could light up with a Kirk and Scotty figure inside with a sound chip - "Thank you, Mr Scott". "Aye Sir"

The 2008 Keepsake Ornaments will be:

Gorn vs. Kirk from TOS "Arena" miniature diorama

USS Reliant (with audio effects, and a red light on the bridge.)
