20 Years since TNG premeire!!

This upcoming fall will be 20 years since TNG's premeire on television. Does anyone know if Paramount has any plans to commemorate the occasion? Do you?

Where were you when TNG premeired? How old were you and di you watch it?

I was 15 years old and in high school. I was somewhat in to sci-fi but more in to comics at the time. I did not watch TNG's premeire, but by te time I went away to college, I was hooked.

I was in my 30's and watched it every week. I made a point of watching it every week and finally bought a VCR so I could tape the show if I couldn't watch it live. TNG represented only the second time in my life that I could watch first run Trek on TV and I wasn't going to let that opportunity slip by.

It was a week or so before my 12th birthday when "Encounter at Farpoint" premiered. I had already started puberty a few months before then, so this was my first exposure to Star Trek "as a man."

William Riker was the reincarnation of James T. Kirk for me. That is what got me hooked on TNG, and made me watch it all the way until "All Good Things..." and the 4 TNG feature films. Honestly, I watched TOS reruns back in the 80's, but if it wasn't for the mega-popularity of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home combined with tuning into TNG's premiere episode "Encounter at Farpoint" in 1987, I obviously would not be a Star Trek fan today nor would I have amassed over 14,000 posts in the past 6 years or so of posting on this on-line bulletin board.

I was a very small tyke who barely knew what TNG was. I think it was the third season I really remember starting to get into it.

Wow, 20 years! I was 15 at the time and had been waiting for it to premiere since the Christmas before when my Mom gave me ST IV which had a sneak peak of it. I remember that first shot of the Enterprise coming straight toward you and zooming into Picard. I was hooked from that moment on!

Pocket Books is releasing "The Buried Age" (a Picard "Tale of the Lost Era"), the MMPB of "Death in Winter", three new post-"Nemesis" novels ("Resistance", "Q & A" and "Before Dishonor"), plus an anthology of TNG short stories. They all have a "TNG: 20 years" logo.

Ah, I remember it well.

I was sitting my 11+ exam (an exam those leaving primary education sit to determine where they'll end up afterwards) and Irish television were showing it before the Beeb, so my parents taped it for me while I studied where a train would meet another on a track if they were travelling at 60mph etc etc

Terribly exciting, I remembered seeing Picard's bald bonce on a preview and thought "Wow, how alien!" then they showed Data in "The Naked Now" and I thought "Wow, how alien!", then they showed the big aliens from "Encounter at Farpoint" and I thought "Wow, jellyfish".

I was sick in bed for "The Arsenal of Freedom" but Mum made up for it by buying me a copy of the TNG comic.

When we moved house shortly after, the first thing the TV was tuned into was "Home Soil", where the away team meet the crew of the terraforming station for the first time.

"All Good Things" premiered when I was finishing school (the BBC had overtaken Irish RTE by then) and I remember a discussion in maths class that was tolerated by the teacher as her son liked the show too.

Memories eh? :)

I was 36 when TNG premiered in 1987. It's hell to be old.

What show are we talking about?

People,

Well, I was 25 and working at a law firm as a proofreader/editor. I had gotten the VHS tape of ST:TVH for my birthday months before and it had the sneak peek of TNG, introducing the characters, and I thought, "Hey, looks cool!"

I remember watching and really enjoying the 2-hour premiere. It took me some time to get used to Patrick Stewart's English voice doing the captain's logs. I liked Picard better then because he was more prickly and a bit of an ass.

I also remember thinking Riker looked too much like "Commander Potsie," Anson Williams from "Happy Days," and being a bit annoyed that they copied the Decker/Ilia relationship with Riker and Troi, who I was hot for from the very beginning! She IS the ORIGINAL CATSUIT BABE!

I liked Data from the beginning, esp. when Picard asks him how is it possible for him to be a virtual encyclopedia of information without knowing the word "snoop." Data replies, "Possibility: A kind of human behavior I was not designed to emulate."

The other characters, I was kind of "eh," but was intrigued and wanted to know more about them. Worf's makeup in the premiere ep was terrible, as I recall.

Those are my earliest memories of TNG. Happy 20th Anniversary!

Damn, you are long in the tooth! Now I see why you drink, Spider! And it looks like you're suffering from Halfheimer's already -- which means you only remember half the stuff you should! At 45, I'm right behind you, though. -- Red Ranger

If I remember correctly, I was still thinking coherently in my 40s. However, that all changes the very second you turn 50. At that point in your life everything goes to hell quickly. Make sure you’ve got a hobby by then.

Or a habit, whichever gets you through the day.

I was around eight years old when TNG premiered in Germany in 1989, I believe.

My uncle recommended "Raumschiff Enterprise" to me, thinking it was TOS.
I watched the first episode and was hooked ever since.

Funny thing: My uncle watched the pilot at his home and didn't like the new series (back then).
He told me that had he known it wasn't TOS, he would never have recommended it to me.

Luck for me that he made a mistake! ;-) But I believe I would've stumbled
across Star Trek anyway.

Where was I? Considering the airdate I looked up (September 28, 1987) it is possible that mom was at least a week or so pregnant with me at the time. I'll have to ask them.

I was seven years old, and I didn't even know about the premiere. I was just a fan of the original Star Trek back then and didn't discover TNG until about the fifth season.

Not sure why it happened that way, because I love both series now!

I was 25 days old, but I watched it from the begining. I had seen reruns of TOS while in the womb, so when I heard TNG was coming on, I just had to watch it. I think my exact response to the premiere was "blablugrrrp".

true story.

I was 20 but living out of the US at the time so I didn't see it until season 2 had started. So I actually started off with seaso 2. It took me several years of reruns to finally get to see season one in it's entirety. I had a hard time believing how awful that first season was. Good thing season 2 won me over (mostly as it really didn't happen until season 3).
