I have a very vague memories of this episode and there was a moment that genuinely scared me where a priest is forced into the corner by cat people, he raises his Bible as a shield and cries 'NOOOOO!' (although today I'd find it unintentionally hilarious).

Yeah, that was sort of the low watermark for that sort of thing. I recall one of the actresses was - no joke here - pushing FORTY when she was supposedly playing a teenager on that show.
Today, I'd cite Smallville as the modern-day example. Tom Welling is supposedly playing Superboy, yet the guy's 32 years old, nearly a full DECADE older than Christopher Reeve was when he was first cast as SuperMAN.
