20 Years since Survival

I've just been reminded that this Sunday, Dec. 6, will be the 20th anniversary of the broadcast of Survival, Part 3, which was the final episode of the original series. It really doesn't seem like 20 years has passed! And to imagine that the show would be once again going strong all these years later, I'd have never imagined it back in 1989 and 1990 when we heard that DW was done.

Wow. I remember tuning into PBS/ETV to suddenly see a little announcement that "the following episode of Doctor Who marks the end of the series on Public Television..." I nearly cried that day. What a sad day it was.

Thank god time flies, because here we are ready to dive into the 11th Doctor...

Bring back Ace!!

Survival is my first ever memory of Doctor Who... back when I was a wee nipper!!!

Ace is my joint favourite with Sarah Jane!!! Do not blaspheme!!!
Seeing a clearly grown-up woman jumping around while shrieking "Wicked!" is not my idea of fun, the "Professor" thing stopped being funny the second time it was used, the ridiculous outfit and obsession with explosives certainly didn't help, and because I want to be nice, I'll just say that I remain unconvinced by Sophie Aldred's acting skills. To each their own of course.

Ace got better as the series went along...

Especially in the later episodes. Her work on Curse of Fenric, Ghost Light and Survival was fantastic. I agree casting someone in her mid-20s as a 16 year old was a bit of a stretch, but I thought it worked. Remember that Susan was played by a woman in her mid-20s, too.

Anr Rose, at 19, was played by the older Billie.

Aldred is great in Fenric. That said there are multiple companions I'd rather see them bring back before her...if they ever did bring another one back (which seems unlikely)

Well, Billie was older only by about 2 years, though. Sophie was nearly a decade older than Ace, and is in fact older (by a few months) than Nicola Bryant, who'd played a 20-something companion several years earlier.

I'd like to see her come back for the same reason people want to see McGann come back - we never got a definitive closure for the character of Ace. The novels offered several different fates for her, and the Death Comes to Time webcast offered another, but we never did find out what happened to her. If she was just a run-of-the-mill companion it wouldn't matter, but there was a conscious effort to make Ace different, with a very detailed backstory and ongoing character development that, left unresolved, remains one of the major dangling threads of the original series. The only bigger "dangler" is the question of what ultimately caused the Eighth Doctor to regenerate. In the case of Ace, given the actress is now in her late 40s, it would be interesting to see how Ace matured (especially if the TV series decided to follow the Ace-as-space-warrior thread of the Virgin New Adventures novels, or the Ace-as-Time-Lord-Padawan thread of Death Comes to Time, or the Ace-as-19th-Century-Debutante thread of the Curse of Fenric novelisation...

^I've always had a story idea in mind where McGann's Doc revisits the decimated-now-rebuilt Earth of the future where he left Susan. We find out during the story that the 7th Doctor saw the coming Time War, and to protect his granddaughter...his only living relative....he was training Ace to become her guardian/bodyguard. Ace grew up, trained for years under the Doctor's guidance, and then was left with Susan to protect her and her family. By the time McGann returns to check up on them, Ace (who now calls herself by her name of Dorothy) is the age of the actress, and has a daughter of her own (played by a younger actress that can obviously kick-ass like mom) from a deceased husband. So, Dorothy and her daughter (who I named Sylvia McShane) continue to protect the now-elderly Susan, who is approaching her first regeneration.

Do I have a plot? Not so much. Just the character pieces... ;)

Suprised nobody's quoted the final words (which were appearently inserted in post production)

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea is asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace; we've got work to do!

Could be worse....look at 90210. :rommie:

Incidentally, there is a Big Finish audio with the Eighth Doctor visiting Susan, but no Ace or connection to the Time War.
