20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican town

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

Is the point of this thread to discuss the content of the OP's linked story, ie the young woman who has accepted the job as police chief and that towns situation and the hurdles she faces in her new occupation, or the choice of language used within the title of the article to which the OP linked?

After three pages of the two topics being intermixed, while it appears to be heavily leaning toward the latter, I just wanted some clarification.

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

^ Either works tbh.

She has major balls for taking on this job, that much is clear. Though I did note that it said she was a criminology student. If she survives this, does that mean she automatically gets her degree? :p Or if not that, I bet she'll have a hell of a dissertation to hand in by the end of it ;)

This young lady is very brave and I hope she can turn things around in her town. I think she is a hero. I just hope her story will shed light on the problems of this town and many other towns in Mexico and other brave individuals stand up and do the same. God Bless Her!

:)

Boy, guy, or dude.

I'll be a man the day people stop carding me for alcohol. :p
Funny, I could use guy or dude, but I don't think I could ever refer to myself as boy. Obviously, I mostly use "gentleman".

Wow... an argument started because somebody said "girl" instead of "woman". The things people get angry about anymore... Might as well join in, I'm kind of bored.
I find it interesting from a lexicological point of view. Words have power. And it's a good excuse as any other to have a bit of ruckus around here. ;)

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

Someone explain to me why a twenty year old should be referred to as a "girl". "Young woman" yes, "girl" no.
This is the silliest thing I've ever read on the internet.

“Congratulations. You're the first to survive the audition.”

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

She is going to die sadly like most of the people that try to stand up to the cartels.

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

^I agree. The young woman's got guts, for sure. I wish her well.

Deliberately biased? You're saying it like it was an intentional slur upon her. I think she's very brave for taking a difficult job in an especially difficult town, but that she is indeed very young to be taking a job that really should be in the hands of someone more experienced, and definitely a lot more ready to take their life into their own hands. And, in my mind, she is a child, relative to natural human lifespan, legal age notwithstanding, and she has now placed herself in harm's way because nobody else would take the job.
To put it in perspective, she can't even legally buy a beer in the US.

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

^ In the UK, she's pretty much an adult, booze, national service and sex wise

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

"girl", "woman", whatever - in the end a bullet from the cartels wont care what she is referred to. It will kill her just as dead.

Because you're puritans. It's 16 or 19 pretty much everywhere in the world but the US. Your company is the UAE, Cameroon, Micronesia, Sri Lanka and Tajikistan.

What's wrong with Micronesia?

That's about 3 days before they put you in a box.

Yep. Where I live, you do NOT get to say "boy," unless you belong to a very specific group permitted to joke about it.
The reason it's demeaning is the same reason that "girl" is demeaning--it was applied to people to treat them as an underclass.

Like others have said, I was only aware of "boy" being derogatory towards African-Americans (PC).

She has major balls for taking on this job...

About certain terms being considered derogatory. I was listening to Howard Stern a few years ago (actually I rarely listen to him) and
he had a group of Asian "girls" on the show. It came up that "Oriental" was considered to be derogatory, which was the first & only time I'd heard that one.

I mean, what makes most terms derogatory is the context in which they were used, at least initially.

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

i refer to any female younger than me as 'girl' regardless of actual age.

any male younger than me tends to be either 'kid', 'lad' or 'guy'.

men my age or older tend to be 'blokes'.

females my age or older are either 'women' or 'ladies' if i wanna be real polite.

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

^ If you're British (and I can't tell by your "location"), isn't geezer a term for men in general?

I know here in the US, the term geezer has become a reference for old men, even though we use the term "old geezer".

Re: 20 year old girl becomes police chief in drugwar-ridden mexican to

I gotta say, am i the only one that finds it hot that as a chief of police, she'd have a gun?

Derailed in one. A new personal best for Miscellaneous. Since he clearly wasn't using "girl" in a derogatory context, this whole tangent has been much ado about nothing.

I hope that her young age, lack of experience, and the media coverage convince the cartel that they're better off letting her live than making a martyr out of her. However, if she actually accomplishes anything significant on the job I doubt they'll hesitate to go after her. They're pretty brazen with their killings of public officials.
