1988 BLOB

I have a special affection for this film, since it was filmed in my hometown of Abbeville, LA.

The football field you see used in the game scene was my high school's, as well as the players with "VC" on their helmets, which stands for Vermilion Catholic. I'm not visible, but I was in the stands when they filmed the "game." They actually had our school play Abbeville High for the scene. Our schools never play each other, but there's the old Catholic school vs. public school tension there, so it was fun to play this faux game.

My mom went to the parking lot where there were pieces of the frozen Blob and was able to score me a piece. I still have it to this day. I'll post a pic later on.

I had always loved movies, but when a film crew comes to your town to film an entire movie, it's an amazing thing. I was ten or eleven when filming started, and it was quite a big deal for our small town in southern Louisiana.

That is so cool...maybe you can clear something up for me regarding this movie...

At the start of the movie, the opening scene shows the town at various places...then at the very end it pans up and we see some the city in the back ground and the camera pans to the left and we see the football stands...My friend says that city, in that scene, is CGI ,it isn't really there...or maybe a mat painting..what say you???

Do you mean the scene at the beginning, when you see "Arborville" with the giant pine trees?

I haven't seen it in years, but if it's the scene you're referring to, the city is real, but the trees were CGI. That scene was a source of a good bit of laughter when I was a kid, because we certainly don't have those trees nor the snow that covered them.

As far as the city in that scene, it was Abbeville, the large Catholic church (St. Mary Magdalene) and all.

I wonder if I can find some pics online...

CGI? Most likely a matte painting, since this was 1988 and hardly big budget.

Superman, were you allowed to see the finished film when it was released?

^^^Yeah, good point. Not CGI...I wasn't thinking.

It was a matte painting as far as I know.

The small theater that the Blob attacks was actually long since closed by the time "The Blob" was filmed. Its exterior was restored for the film, and many folks in town had hoped it would also be restored inside and used to screen the film.

Sadly, this didn't happen. We did get to watch "The Blob" at our newer theater in town, a small four-screen theater owned by the Frank who gave his name to the other theater. It was quite a big deal when the film "premiered" in town. I remember the local news being there and it made headlines in our small paper and the bigger papers in other cities, if I remember correctly.

I love this kind of story, K-al. You can almost see this kind of thing transforming a small town like that.

Okay...big question. The scene where Kevin Dillon is trying to jump the bridge with his motorbike...does that place really exist? Or was it manufactured for the movie?
