1988 BLOB

I remember seeing this movie when it came out 20 years ago (hard to believe its been that long since I last saw it)...Anyway, I remember liking it then as a B movie, and I just saw it with my kids tonight on ENCORE. And you know what? It still isn't that bad.

Not as good as McQueen's version, for sure. Kevin Dillon is no Steve McQueen. But the gore effects are pretty good, and I liked how the director paced the movie...and for a B movie, in the tradition of Eight Legged Freeks (another one I liked) The Blob, 1988, isn't bad.

Years later they did another blob movie. And I swear Donald Sutherland plays the same role he did in Puppet Master remakes...good guy who turns out to be bad...and you see it coming a mile away..

Anyway...I recommend The Blob 1988. Not great, not bad..just good goofy horror film fun...

What other Blob movie? There's no Donald Sutherland in the Blob. I have that movie. It stars some nobody with a motorbike and some girl. The only bad guy was the black guy that was leading that rogue military agency.

I thought The Puppet Master was an 80's horror movie with a few sequels involving little dolls that kill people? What am I thinking of?

Not sure..but I do remember a Outer Limits episode, I think, about some lady being chased around her house by some tiny 'savage' doll man with a spear...

Rob

That's the Zuni Fetish Doll part of TRILOGY OF TERROR
There was also a Night Gallery episode episode with a killer doll.

Based on the story "Prey" by Richard Matheson.

I liked how it was scarier than the Steve McQueen version, but I didn't like the design of the blob so much, especially the tendrils, and I didn't find myself liking many of the characters.

Still - very cool remake.

^Yep, in '94.

Puppet Master is/was a c-grade horror franchise about murderous marionettes (give or take the string).

The Puppet Masters is based on Heinlein's book about parasitic aliens, and starred Donald Sutherland.

That's my second favourite Heinlein book. Was it any good, or did it escape my attention for good reason?

As for the Blob remake, I haven't seen it in ages and I never did see the McQueen version all the way through, so I can't make a fair comparison.

I remember the 80s blob for breaking some conventions of horror films that are not often done - horrifically killing children, etc.

How about Son of Blob? It was disco-riffic!

Funny you say that..I started watching it with my 14 year old daughter and 4 year old son...the first half hour has a 'speilberg' feel to it..but then whammo...it gets pretty gory. I had to send my son out of the room because I forgot how gory it was towards the middle and end...

I have a special affection for this film, since it was filmed in my hometown of Abbeville, LA.

The football field you see used in the game scene was my high school's, as well as the players with "VC" on their helmets, which stands for Vermilion Catholic. I'm not visible, but I was in the stands when they filmed the "game." They actually had our school play Abbeville High for the scene. Our schools never play each other, but there's the old Catholic school vs. public school tension there, so it was fun to play this faux game.

My mom went to the parking lot where there were pieces of the frozen Blob and was able to score me a piece. I still have it to this day. I'll post a pic later on.

I had always loved movies, but when a film crew comes to your town to film an entire movie, it's an amazing thing. I was ten or eleven when filming started, and it was quite a big deal for our small town in southern Louisiana.
