1973 Rock's best year?

Saw an article about this. Mentioned Who & Quadrophenia, Zep & Houses of the Holy. & of course Floyd & dark side of the Moon.

Sabs had Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, & Purps released Made in Japan. All I all not a bad year.

75 might be better with Physical Graphitti & Wish You Were Here. The Tommy movie as well.

Bowie released "Aladdin Sane" in 73, and I'm pretty sure a band called KISS released their first ST album that year as well. It's shaping up to be a pretty nice year.

No doubt, 1973 was a good year for music.

Also released in 1973:
Aerosmith's first album, Aerosmith.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Bachman-Turner Overdrive II
Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-nerd
Queen - Queen
REO Speedwagon - Ridin' The Storm Out
Styx - Styx II
ZZ Top - Tres Hombres

73 was also the year Tubular Bells came out. Might not of been rock album as such but it gave Richard Branson (who admits in his biog that Oldfied was screwed over) the money to sign up other artists who hit it big to Virgin Records.

Kick-ass year for ALL types of music: hard rock, acid rock, EZ rock, pop, the beginning of country pop.

All that music made it a great year to be a senior in high school. :D.

Alice Coopers Billion Dollar Babies tour was biggest of 73, beating out Stones previous attendance records.

75 has Kiss Alive, Frampton Comes alive just missed, 76 release.

73 also had the Stones hit Angie.

Well, my favorite album is "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" so for that reason I have to give major recognition to 1974.

But 1967 was the best year for rock music, as long as we're not using that narrow definition of rock that would exclude the Beatles, or the idea of rock only being "hard rock" (and not psychedelic rock, pop rock, folk rock, art rock, etc. etc.).

I mean, Come On:

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper AND Magical Mystery Tour
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? AND Axis: Bold as Love
Cream - Disraeli Gears
The Doors - The Doors AND Strange Days
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
The Who - The Who Sell Out
Janis Joplin / Big Brother and the Holding Company
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The Velved Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Love - Forever Changes
The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request AND Flowers AND Between the Buttons
Procul Harum - Procul Harum
Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield Again
Moby Grape - Moby Grape

And these are just some of the most obvious - hardcore music-philes will know that there are a couple dozen other classics from the year.

This doesn't even include some fantastic jazz and blues releases, such as "Born Under A Bad Sign" by Albert King, and "Nefertiti" by Miles Davis, and great soul releases by Otis Redding, James Brown and Aretha Franklin, to name a couple. But even without this not-quite-rock stuff, the year is still amazing.

I know these aren't all necessarily the best albums by some of these artists ("Flowers" is no "Let It Bleed") but on the whole I don't think any year ever produced more truly great, classic albums. Just the top four artists' releases on the above list are practically enough to make 1967 the best year in rock history.

I was also going to give the nod to 1967 since Disraeli Gears, The Doors, Surrealistic Pillow, Forever Changes and a few others on that list are some of my favourite albums - Disraeli Gears probably being my favourite. Also, I'm not that much of a Beatles fan, but everyone knows how important Sergeant Pepper's was - 1967 for the win.
