%18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing facts

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

I have a hard time believing any of this since I live in a neo-conservative bastion of rural America and in my entire life have never met someone who believes that witches exist, that the sun revolves around the Earth, or that school teachers ought to preach religious doctrine.

As for Obama being a Muslim - I certainly don't think he is. What I find most disturbing isn't that a lot of people think he is, but that even more people are simply unsure about what his faith is at all. This article explains it better than I ever could....

As for Death Panels - Maybe the reason so many people believe this is because of the Independent Medicare Advisory Council, a part of the orginial ObamaCare bill. Look it up. It basically meant that Medicare would have been able to deny care to the eldery and disabled based on government bureaucrats' arbitrary valuations of those patient's lives. Sounds like a Death Panel to me. Thankfully, this part of the bill was rejected. However, because it was even introduced, the belief lingers.

Continued the tradition. Is Bush muslim? Is Clinton? Is Bush Sr? Was Reagan? Is Carter?
I have it on good authority that Jimmy Carter is, in fact, a Muslim. His Muslim name is Abdully Kahrtar. And he's actually an olive farmer.

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

I'm sorry. My entire life I was led under the false impression that in America people were free to practice and be part of or not practice and not be part of whatever religion they wish.

Oh, don't start with all that post-Reformation, Enlightenment gobbledygook. You see, the Founding Fathers inherited a bunch of Scottish and European thoughts (called the Enlightenment and such), which held that a person is free to choose their religion.

As opposed to the convenient thinking that since one cannot choose their own religion they'll go to Hell for rejecting it or challenging what has been believed for millennia.

Gridlock. We know what each other thinks, we won't change each others' minds, so let's leave it at that.

.
So the large mass of people think he might be Muslim or more likely non religious because they suspect he pretended to be Christian for political effect

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

Sounds like being baptized into the Catholic Church, I believe the position of The Vatican is that you remain Catholic until your bishop formally releases you
I always thought the Catholic Church is like the Mafia: once you're in, the only way you're leaving is in a box!
Islam is passed along like chewing gum stuck to the bottom of the Y chromosome.
That's a clever simile; may I borrow it sometime?
So if a Muslim man has kids with a Jewish mother, are the kids Jewish Muslims?
Actually they're Juslims.

I swear, sometimes I have the feeling that some folks here don't “get” gturner's sense of irony.

So be it.

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

To not be a Muslim, Obama sure brags on it and defends it a lot. This is the first time in my lifetime I can remember any president supporting any one religion. I don't think it is the place of any president to stand of for the building of any mosque, synagogue, church, etc. of any religion. The founding fathers intended for our government to be independent of religions and this includes Islam as well. I think people are getting pretty sick of allowances being made for one particular religion.

Yeah, it's not like you've ever had a president who believed Jesus told him to invade another country or anything, right?

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

It makes me shake my head sadly when people state things like "This is the first time in my life that I remember that something like this happening in politics....". It often means that the person speaking has only relatively recently developed an interest in Politics and thus only recently has begun paying attention. They don't actually know what happened before they took up their interest and have an appropriately skewed view. In many other cases individuals seem to have very short (or selective) memory.

Supporters of politicians all along the political spectrum are guilty of this.

In order to demonstrate the ideal of the acceptance of all religions (and of our fellow citizens who follow these religions), our Presidents have historically hosted a variety of these religious celebratory dinners at the White House, regardless of what the President's own religious beliefs are.

He turned Dr. Laura into a newt.

Or did she always look like that?

Yeah, gturner's harmless. I just don't think he's as funny as he used to be. Need more rabbit stories, or maybe drunken roommate party stories, or retarded-neighbor-kid-digging-up-my-septic-tank-for-$2-a-year stories.

No kidding. You can't read his posts literally. Personally, I think most of them are freakin' hilarious!

Kind of lik when a teenager makes a " 10 Greatest Movies of All Time" list. It'll have one from the 80s, 8 made from 1998-2010, and "The Wizard of Oz".

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

Why is this even an issue? It's not as if there's any way he could win. He keeps it to himself, and "We don't know WHAT he believes!" He says some variation of, "I believe Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through him," and he's proselytizing.

As for trying to figure out what denomination he is, I'd point out that for many black Christians, denomination is less relevant than cultural experience.

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

The whole question is moot anyway. So what if he is Muslim? Does that somehow disqualify him from being president?

Not much has been happening lately. Back in June I ripped the strawberry plants out of the garden and planted sweet corn.

Meanwhile we had goldfish and two oscars in the pond, a tiger oscar called Obama and a pale albino Oscar called Palin. They disappeared. I asked all my neighbors if they'd seen my fish. They all said snarky things like "What, they just packed a suitcase and left?" I said, "I don't know! That's the point! They've got to be somewhere and the hospital has a bunch of nice fish ponds they might've moved to. I'm going to put posters up around the neighborhood."

A week after than something started shredding and eating ears of corn out of the garden in the middle of the night. I figured the fish thief was after breading, so I warned the neighbors that another big fish raid was potentially in the offing. I know we have racoons, possums, and a cat that like our back yard, so maybe one of them knows something.

Anyway, I'm still investigating.

Re: %18 of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and other disturbing fac

Why would you rip out strawberry plants? They're perennials, you know.
