11th Doctor Casting announcment tommorow

Jim, aren't you supposed to be upset that he's not Paterson Joesph? You should be slagging him off too... go on, you know you want to unleash some bile...
I know, I said I would be but I'm really not. The guy totally won me over in his interview.

Thing is, I admit it, I would never have cast him in the role. But I don't shit Hugo award winning scripts before breakfast. It's an inspired choice, and when I think about the fact that he obviously fits Moffat's *vision* for his first Doctor... well, it excites and enthralls me in a billion different ways. My favourite TV show thrives on change and this is a perfect expression of that.

I feel nothing but pure optimism for the future of this amazing show after tonight, so regretfully I have no bile to give you (for once). ;)

I know what you mean. This whole "gap year" thing was meant to reinvigorate and re-energise the show, and I think such a "shake up" will do exactly that... I even think it is the sort of thing that could be ackowledged on screen, and work too. The Doctor trying to take over a situation, older guy dismissing him as being too young, and then bringing the gravitas you'd expect of the Doctor and changing the situation. Not something that should be pulled often, but I think it could work in and unusual kinda way putting the Doctor out of his element a bit.

oh, just wait for his first run-in with UNIT....

Col Green: You? YOU'RE the Doctor? You're just a KID! Piss off!

Is Col Green a fanboy then?

I was thinking something more subtle, throw him off his game until he realises he is THE Doctor, and he takes over, possibly after something goes wrong... that kinda thing.

Not impressed with this new Doctor he is far too young and I have never even seen him before. Id seen David Tennent around before he became Dr Who and I knew he would be good for the role, but this guy!

Doctor- Don't be fooled by the appearance........[dark] I'm older than you think [/dark]

Bad Alien- You? boy?! Har Har Har!

Doctor- If I don't like what your doing, i'm going to stop you............

I must say, after having seen the interview (thanks for the link!) I don't even think that he looks that young anymore. Previously, I had only seen pictures of him. He said he was brave in his interpretation of the role which sounds intriguing. He'll probably make a fine Doctor and I'm looking forward to his tenure. They should think of a new hairdo for him, though. His current one looks kind of silly.

When he's talking about other iconic roles, can anyone make out what he says after Robin Hood? It sounds a bit like Shaun Pirates.
Sherlock Holmes.
Which Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are currently "re-imagining".

From BBC Press Office
BBC Wales Drama, BBC One and Hartswood Films announce Sherlock, a contemporary remake of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Starter For Ten, Stuart A Life Backwards) as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office, Hot Fuzz) as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson.
Rupert Graves (God On Trial, Midnight Man) plays Inspector Lestrade.
The drama is co-created by the amazing partnership of Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss (The League Of Gentlemen, Doctor Who, Crooked House) and produced by Sue Vertue (Coupling, The Cup).
The 1 x 60-minute episode, written by Moffat, will shoot in January 2009 and will be directed by Coky Giedroyc (Virgin Queen, Blackpool, Oliver Twist).
Sherlock is a thrilling, funny, fast paced take on the crime drama genre set in present day London.
The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain – they live at the same address, have the same names and, somewhere out there in the London of 2009, Moriarty is waiting for them.
Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, says: "Our Sherlock is a dynamic superhero in a modern world, an arrogant, genius sleuth driven by a desire to prove himself cleverer than the perpetrator and the police, everyone in fact."
Sherlock will be produced by Hartswood Films, continuing their fruitful relationship with the BBC. Past productions include Coupling, Men Behaving Badly, Jekyll and, most recently, The Cup for BBC Two.

I have no opinion on this choice - I've not heard of him, not seen him in anything, and it'll be a while before either of those things changes. I plan to wait and see. Perhaps it's because I'm one of the few people on the planet (or so it seems) who doesn't believe Tennant was the second coming but I really can't get worked up about something / someone I haven't seen yet (I leave that to some of the denizens of the Trek XI forum).

I don't like Matt Smith at all. He's kind of boring. He looks too much like Adam from the Torchwood episode of the same name- it's kind of creepy (and I liked Adam).

I think he's great. He's got this real geeky and eccentric look to him that will be great for The Doctor.

I wondered what he might be like, but the last bit of the interview suggested he might be a bit quirkly in the role. He certainly doesn't act as young as he looks in the interview.

From looks alone I had imagined he would be some sort of brooding fellow, but he seems to be someone who might make a good Doctor from first impressions.

The people behind these decisions are competent people. They gave use two great doctors and the third might be a winner too.

or he regenerates 13 episodes later ;)

So, my first impression had the "too young!" slant that many have already voiced, however after watching the interview video I have faith that Moffat has made a good choice. Through his youthfulness I could see hints of potential darkness and centuries-old weariness that could surface once he actually steps into the role. And episodes 1 & 4 are brilliant? Can't wait.
