11:59

Thoughts on this episode?
For me its the most pointless episode of the entire series.
Threshold is better.

I do not care about some random ancestor of Janeway and some story of the 'little guy' being done over by the man.

Season 5 is in general excellent, Voyager at its best, but this episode is just terrible.

Am I wrong? Does it have merit?

I think because (understandably) Kate Mulgrew is very fond of the episode, it gets a lot more credit than it deserves.

I think that VOY, to its credit, was willing to try new things (as long as no character development for anyone but Seven or the Doc was involved). Some of these experiments were successful. Some, less so, and I think that by and large this episode was the latter. This effort makes some "worst Voyager episode" lists, but it's not in the same class as stinkers like "Threshold".

Basically, "11:59" is an episode that some people liked and others did not. It's easy to see why Mulgrew liked it, though; it gave her a chance to stretch.

11:59 Relish in Made up history that makes you feel better about youself.

Vs.

Living Witness: The Absolute Truth is essential to our soul as a species.

I think that Janeway is glad to know the truth about her ancestor... she just needs to come to understand that just because Shannon O'Donnell wasn't the woman Kathryn thought she was, it doesn't change the woman Kathryn became because of her.

I remember liking "11:59" a lot, but again haven't seen since the 90s. I liked them just sitting around telling stories and I like the message that stuff is just stuff but it's people in your lives that matter and you should try and hold on to them.
Them taking the chance on the concept of the episode was worth it to exist. I love people stepping outside the confines of the normal episode structure.
Someone talks about cryofreeze for long haul travel but I don't think we ever hear about that again.
Was the Millennium Gate meant to still be around in the present?

A hundred and 50 years later they were diverting comets with a huge honking space gun to terraform Mars.

The Millennium Gate may have still been there, but every seal would have been broken, and they would have cut hundreds of windows in the side, and turned off the internal vents tying to recycle the same dirty air 10 billion times, when there's perfectly good working Eco system outside.

The design may have be reused every time they Terra Formed a new planet, for the first 75 years.

Did we see any structures in TNG Home Soil where the aliens called us ugly bags of mostly water?

(The framed photograph.)
NEELIX: Shannon O'Donnel Janeway, circa 2050. We did a little more research. This photograph was taken in a small park near Portage Creek, thirty eight years after the dedication of the Millennium Gate. I thought it would look nice in your ready room, on the shelf next to your desk.
JANEWAY: Thank you, But I'm not so sure she has a place there any more.
SEVEN: You are mistaken, Captain.
JANEWAY: Oh?
SEVEN: Her life captured your imagination. Historical details are irrelevant.
TUVOK: I concur with that analysis.
CHAKOTAY: If it weren't for Shannon O'Donnel, you never would have joined Starfleet.
JANEWAY: Yeah, and I would have never have got you all stuck here in the Delta Quadrant.
TORRES: It gave us all time to get to know each other.

Imagine in a hundred years, what reputable Congressman George Santo's eventual family will think of their ancestor depending on which lies survive the test of history?

Back in the day down in NZ the only way to watch the latest Trek was the monthly VHS releases. I remember this one (5.12) and was intrigued by the episode title.

I'm glad the other episode was good (Relativity).

No chemistry between the 2 leads. One of my least favorite.

I remember an interview where Mulgrew was told that it was unbelievable/unlikley that she would be into such an old man, and she came back swinging, saying that she (or Janeway) could only hope to marry that well.

Alternatively are we absolutely positive that Shannon O'Donnel did not marry the son?

Alternatively alternatively, Henry Janeway was hiding from the modern world as if he was a war criminal.

Consider how quickly he fathered what looked liked 15 babies with a 40 year old woman.

Henry Janeway is a Superman.

Wow.

I think KM was friends with the actor. Maybe that's why she defended him so vehemently?

Good for her. If we're not going to discriminate about genders where love is concerned, we shouldn't be pissy about age, either.

There's such a thing as grandchildren.

I looked at the picture, there were 4 adults, two adolesents and two children.

Two of the adults may have been spouses.

I suppose if you're fiending for females featured in flannel you'll find this festivity in a foreign past fascinating.

I can appreciate them stepping outside of the normal VOY episodic structure but this one is one I skip on re-watch. Kind of dull. Plodding. Pedantic.

Even though I like threshold more, 11:59 was a good episode that shows how our perception of history develops.

Janeway had this idea in her head about one of her ancestors that was totally wrong. And then she discovers that she was wrong.

At first, she starts hating that ancestor, but then she realized that ancestor had a place in her universe as well. It turns out that the ancestor was important, but not in the same way that Janeway originally thought.

The other reason why I liked it is because I am one of the people that would have become lost in Henry Janeways bookstore. They don’t have bookstores like that around anymore

I just noticed 11:59 is from the same season as Night. They should have broadcast Night after 11:59 making 11:59 an early attempt to relieve the boredom on board (delving in their family histories), with Janeway becoming temporarily depressed when she finds out she made her career choices based on a myth.
