Brilliant example of Trek being able to explore more ideas than just spacey type stuff or horrendous slap in the face from writers who were so bored by this point that they basically just amused themselves

The Henry Janeway stuff bored the crap out of me if I'm honest but the episode did provide me with something that I loved and don't recall seeing in any other episode. Namely, the crew just hanging out together and chatting like pals. Reminiscing, laughing and chilling

More of that would have been good but yeah, the bulk of the episode was just abysmal. I just didn't care about learning about Janeway's background that much

I liked that episode, too. But I didn't like "Janeway" playing her own ancestor. It is always the same: Jonathan Frakes as Will, Thomas and Thaddeus Riker. Brent Spiner as the whole Soong Clan. They are not ancestors. They are clones. I have bad experiences with clones.

I voted for utter unwatchable crap but that is way too extreme. I would label it "dull".

It is certainly one of the most boring episodes, always found it a bit hard to get through.

Genealogy never interested me at all so it starts off with a big yawn and then suddenly it's all luddites and old books. The yawn gets bigger.

It wasn't great but it wasn't bad. I like the occasional off the ship episodes anyway.

I also really liked the crew hanging out together during off hours. I was left scratching my head as to why Shannon fell for Henry though . She had an adventurous spirit and he seemed content to be shut up in his shop.

Sometimes, wandering spirits crave stability. She didn't want to be in a dull town. I doubt she was opposed to settling in the right place.

I liked the juxtaposition of this season 5 ep and season 4's "Living Witness" with their themes of history being subject to the whims of memory, the politics of the situation. Yet with all their imperfections, these histories are still quite powerful in how they move individuals centuries removed to survive, to overcome.

With LW, we see how the inaccurate memory of Voyager fueled a civil war and later how the correct one helped foster a reconciliation of an entire culture.

With 11:59, we see how the inaccurate memory of Shannon O'Donnell helped fuel one woman's imagination.

But strangely enough, had Janeway known the truth, she should have been inspired just as much. Not because she fought to open the Millenium Gate against all odds, but because she worked on/in the Millenium Gate for years and raised many kids/grandkids to honor hard work and excel in the sciences such that 300 years later she was still inspiring her progeny.

I liked it for the fact that it was something different, and it was a good showcase for Kate Mulgrew's verisimilitude as an actor (ie, being able to play Janeway's ancestor in such a way that she mirrors Kathryn, but is really quite different as well).

I clicked interesting idea. It was a little slow and strange at first; but later I realized it was interesting they explore how the truth can get polished up and turned into hopeful, fanciful lore -- in fact, downright lies. If there is one thing I've learned from family DNA and paper genealogy, it's that.

I have the same opinion of this episode I have of every Star Trek episode that insists on breaking its genre. Utter Unwatchable Crap.

I didn't give a rat's ass about the grouchy old store owner and Janeway's ancestor was just Janeway in a different change of clothes.

Utter unwatchable crap

But I've only seen it once and hated it once we were into the flashback. I might have liked it better if the rest of the cast had played the historical characters as well.

Why was he so old? Why couldn't she fall for some young devastatingly handsome, charismatic fellow adventure?

And why did she have to settle down in some back water and give up on life in order to have a family? Was this the 50's she went back to? The whole thing stank of convention and cliche

The only reason I keep watching this episode is for the bridge crew chatting in Janeway's ready room. I fast forward the Henry Janeway bilge
