100 Days War

Now 100 days without smoking. Not one cheat--not one puff. I've even been lubed up several times in smoking bars and made it through.

Non-smoking has become a habbit now. I've held a few cigs (not lit, just holding someone elses between my fingers) and it feels plain silly. 99% of the time I see someone smoking, I find it just plain silly that I ever did that to myself.

Still, about once every three days or so I'll have a major urge. Its usually gone in about 2-3 minutes, but its an intense 150 seconds, I'll tell you that.

I've yet to have my first "smoking didn't even enter my mind" day.

I smoked between 1-2 packs per day for 15 years, from 17 to 32. (far more were 2 pack days than 1 pack).


Anyone else wanna share a quitting story? Or a smoking story? Or some blueberry pie?
 
Congratulations! That is truly fantastic!
Did you quit cold turkey or use a patch, nicotine gum or any other help?


My dad quit cold turkey and he wasn't happy about it. It happened like this:

He was a 1-2 pack smoker for a bazillion years. Then i had my first child and we held the christening party in the house. It had been decided that we would ask anyone who lit up to smoke outside. Our house was now going to be smoke free, now that there was an infant living there.

My dad went to light up at the party and i quickly asked him to go out onto the front porch to smoke (it was late Sept, in Nu Yawk, so it wasn't like it was cold or anything). He got so frigging pissed off at me! OMG! You would think i asked him to light HIMSELF on fire outside!! So, he grumbled, cursed and went outside to smoke.

He never smoked again.

Years later, when he was in the hospital with scarred lungs from smoking and all the childhood pulmonary illnesses he had in the past, he looked up at me and thanked me for making him quit, because he knew, that if he hadn't he wouldn't have lived as long as he did.

I am/was almost the same - between 1 and 1 1/2 packs a day, seldom more, for 10 years between 16 and 26, quit last august, not a puff since then.
I had strong urges often for a long time but now I'm really not thinking about it much anymore, I haven't seriously considered smoking a cigarette for weeks now I think.

Looking back, it's hard for me to even see what was so difficult, but of course that's just hindsight, it was really difficult often.

One thing that's really strange is, that I've "relapsed" numerous times in my sleep. I've woken up many times thinking "fuck, what have I done?" for a moment before realising that it was only a dream. :D
 
^Never thought of that. I've never smoked in my dreams. Not even when I smoked, I think.

Speaking of, I murdered someone in my dream the other night. That shit woke me up and I couldn't shake whatevere the hell creepy feeling that was for hours.
 
I never did when I was still smoking also.

Btw. I did gain quite a bit of weight, but I absolutely don't care, I'm feeling better than ever

About a year after I quit, I had my one and only smoking dream. I vividly remember taking those long, luxuriant dream-drags on my Camel filter. The pleasure was almost sensual.

When I woke up, I wanted to cry. :(

But I got over it. :)

Congratulations on going 100 days. Quitting cigarettes was the hardest thing I ever did in my life, but it was worth it: it's just about the single best thing you can do for your health. I put on weight, but being overweight is not nearly as bad for you as smoking cigarettes.

A friend of mine who kept smoking--a man my own age, just 41--had a heart attack last week. That could easily have been me, if I hadn't quit. Instead, I recently found out that I'm in better health than I have any right to be.

Now, here's the bad news:

You're going to want one for the rest of your life. It never goes away.

But it does get easier, until finally, what is an almost overwhelming urge becomes just a brief nostalgic regret.

This story actually reminds me a bit of my Grandpa. Before I was born he would smoke all the time. Eventually he stopped, but unfortunately, by then it was too late and he died due to smoking related illnesses at the age of 65. Suffice it to say, seeing him degrade into nothing was all I needed to swear never to pick up the habit.

Have you found a substitute? Many people will chew gum, or eat more after quitting? I know one person who threw herself in to exercise. She quit smoking and lost thirty pounds.
