10 O’Clock Live ch4 (uk)

Last night's episode was epic. Between David Mitchell's rant in the Listen to Mitchell section and the clip from The One Show I was really impressed with it.

The David Mitchell rant was nothing short of superb, wonderfully written and delivered to perfection. I also loved the Jimmy Carr SAS sketch with him struggling to stop swinging in circles so he could read the auto cue - it was priceless

The show has really hit its stride though I still think they don't know fully what to do with the lovely Lauren Laverne.

Well series 2 has been confirmed. Shorter run and runtime 10x45 minutes rather than the 15x60 minutes we had in the first series and a bit of a tweak to the format so they're not reliant on their being a big story to run with every week.

The Guardian
Channel 4 has confirmed a second series order of 10 O'Clock Live, the satirical take on the week's news featuring Jimmy Carr and David Mitchell, but has tweaked the show's format and cut its running time to 45 minutes.
The live programme, which airs on a Thursday night and aims to lure younger viewers turned off by Newsnight and Question Time, retains its four original presenters, with Charlie Brooker and Lauren Laverne again joining Carr and Mitchell. It will return to Channel 4 in early 2012.
The first series of 10 O'Clock Live, which began in January and ran for 15 episodes, launched with 1.9 million viewers to a generally positive critical reaction.
It featured interviews with politicians and cultural commentators, as well as debates and sketches. But by the end of the run its average audience had dropped to 1 million, as the show's writers struggled to keep producing engaging new material to fill an hour of airtime.
To combat that, the next series will run for 10 episodes of 45 minutes, which Channel 4 said would "still allow for an in-depth look at the news stories but will mean we're less dependent on the news cycle".

anyone else think it would be better if was just brooker and mitchell ranting?

It's good that it's returning, but I'd still prefer a new series of Newswipe. Or Screenwipe. Or even Gameswipe. Why did the Wipes have to end? :( This is all Konnie Huq's fault.

I don't know they've necessarily ended. Charlie has just been busy with other stuff. Someone should ask him on twitter if there's any chance of more.
Apparently he's working on 2011-Wipe right now...

I think she's a good fit for the show's moderator - I don't get the feeling anyone else wants to play host. And her bits are very hit and miss for me and some are too on-the-nose. Jimmy Carr I don't dislike, and some of his jokes are good, but it seemed that as the season went on he went more and more toward Johnny Carson buffoonery and out of the four his bits were the most out of place. Brooker and Mitchell are consistently good imo (well all of this is my opinion, obviously). They're my favorite part of the show so the idea of a show with just them sounds more appealing, but maybe there is something to be said about the contrast and variety with all four on.

I think Mitchell is fantastic but sometimes he seems to not know how to handle an audience and he stops speaking then starts again and it's awkward. Also at the end when they do the tomorrow's news bit (which admittedly is often derailed for one reason or another), sometimes Mitchell seems to want to be anywhere but there. He rarely does anything with his newspaper and sometimes Carr just bulldozers over everyone else with stuff that isn't that interesting. I don't know, maybe Mitchell just doesn't like the concept for the closing/newspapers bit.

But definitely my least favorite part of the show is Carr showing up in some silly costume and doing a routine that feels like bad SNL oftentimes. And I wonder if the roundtable discussions would be better if they had more time to breathe if Carr's presence was reduced or if Mitchell just hasn't found his groove as moderator yet. Some of the discussions are more productive/interesting than others.

I do enjoy the show a lot, despite what appears to be me complaining for a few paragraphs. I should also mention I'm American and it's interesting to see political comedy about the UK and learn a little bit more about the political system there and the terminology in a format that's a bit different than just reading news articles from the UK.

And it's also pretty fascinating to see Mitchell deeply disappointed at the cuts to the education system and realize that what Mitchell is disgusted at is still such a big improvement over the US system of higher education. IMO, of course.
